Heat Pack Runtime for a Reptile Enclosure: Every Published Figure, and Where the Publishers Disagree

One product, four answers.
  • The manufacturer prohibits the placement the question assumes, and disclaims the outcome. UniHeat's FAQ states: "DO NOT place shipping warmer directly on or beside sensitive living things, as they may be harmed", and closes with "shipping warmers are not guaranteed to keep animals or plants alive in extreme cold weather spells, as there are many variables to consider. Joining those two sentences is this site's own reasoning rather than a published protocol, and the conclusion is that a barrier and supervision are not optional refinements for a reptile, they are the whole safety case.
  • Rated hours are neither a cliff nor a guarantee, and UniHeat's own charts show both ends of that. Read off the manufacturer's published 72-hour chart against gridlines spaced 30°F apart, the curve is still around 120°F at hour 60 and around 85°F at hour 80, so output does not stop at the rating. In the other direction, the same manufacturer says a pack in "too large of an open air environment" never warms up properly at all, so in an open enclosure useful output can be effectively absent long before the rating expires. Do not read a rated duration as hours of usable heat for an animal.
  • There is a freeze floor that runs the other way, and it lands in exactly the scenario a reptile keeper is planning for. Pangea Reptile publishes: "If the temperature in the shipping box falls below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, the disposable heat pad may stop working because the water in the heat pack may freeze." SaltwaterAquarium.com's listing for UniHeat's 40-hour pack carries the same limit in its own words: "Warmer MAY STOP working if temps inside the shipping box or area falls below 32 degrees F". A long winter outage in an unheated space is the case where a rated 40 hours can become far less, so stocking a pack is not the same as having a plan.

The question that brings people here is arithmetic-shaped. There is a rated number on the packet, there is a room that is getting colder, there is an animal that cannot make its own heat, and it feels like those three things should multiply into an hour. Forty-hour pack, moderately insulated forty-gallon enclosure, house at 58 degrees: how long?

The honest answer is that the multiplication does not exist, and the reason is not that nobody has bothered. It is that the rated hours describe a chemical reaction inside a sealed pouch, every temperature figure attached to that reaction is scoped to a closed insulated box of about one cubic foot, and the manufacturer says in writing that an open room is too large an air volume for the pack to warm up properly. Between the pouch and your terrarium there is a conversion step, and no manufacturer, reseller, veterinary reference or professional body located in this research performs it.

So this page does something different, and more useful. It puts every published figure for these products in one place, attributed to the exact publisher that published it, and then it shows you where those publishers disagree with each other about the same pack. That disagreement is not a footnote. On one pack, the 40-hour warmer that Pangea Reptile calls the most popular type for shipping reptiles, amphibians and insects, four sources give four different answers about surface temperature and one of those answers is no figure at all, three sources publish three different peak times, and three sources publish three incompatible rules for what happens when you add a second pack. If you were about to trust a number, you should first know that the number has three siblings.

Two rules govern everything below. Every figure is attached to the publisher who published it and to the container that figure is scoped to. And where two publishers disagree, both get a row, and neither one gets quietly promoted into the answer.

The Finding: Rated Hours Are a Property of the Pack

Start with what a rating is a claim about, because almost every confusion downstream comes from misreading it.

UniHeat USA describes the mechanism plainly: “UniHeat packs contain a sealed mixture of iron powder, water, salt, activated carbon, and vermiculite. Once exposed to oxygen, the iron begins a controlled oxidation process that releases steady heat over the rated duration. Removing the pack from its airtight wrapper activates the warmer.” HotHands describes its own hand warmers the same way, as “Air-activated warmers contain natural ingredients including iron, activated charcoal, and salt, producing heat through oxidation when exposed to air.” Same family of chemistry, different formulation and different intended output.

The rating, then, is a statement about how long that reaction runs. It is not a statement about what your enclosure will be sitting at while it runs, and the manufacturer’s own instruction for choosing a duration confirms which variable it is indexed to. UniHeat Canada’s FAQ opens its guidance with this: “Calculate how many days the shipment will be in transit and choose the appropriate shipping warmer size based on the number of hours anticipated. For example: a shipment that is going to take about 2-3 business days in transit would be best suited to use a 72-hour shipping warmer.”

Transit hours in, pack size out. There is no term in that sentence for the size of the box, the quality of the insulation or the temperature outside. Those variables appear elsewhere in UniHeat’s guidance, and they appear as things that affect performance, never as inputs to a duration calculation.

This distinction is the whole page in one line, so it is worth stating in the form a reader can carry: the rated hours describe how long the pack’s own reaction is rated to run. They tell you nothing about whether that heat is enough for anything.

Why we could not find the conversion published anywhere

We looked for a published relationship between a chemical warmer’s runtime and the temperature it holds a specific enclosure at, across manufacturer sites, reseller product pages, the Merck Veterinary Manual, PetMD and the professional body for reptile and amphibian veterinarians, on August 15, 2026. What that search returned was three kinds of document and no fourth.

Manufacturers publish duration, activation time, and a temperature figure scoped to one standard box. Resellers publish variations on the manufacturer’s figures, sometimes contradicting them. Veterinary sources publish husbandry temperature ranges and a standard for what a reptile heat source should be, the first requirement of which is thermostat control. Nobody publishes the bridge.

That is a description of what a search on one day returned, not a proof that no such document exists anywhere. If a manufacturer publishes a derating table by enclosure volume, we did not find it, and finding one would improve this page rather than embarrass it. What we can say with more confidence is narrower and stronger: none of the seventeen sources cited at the foot of this page contains one, and two of them explicitly decline to give one. UniHeat’s answer to what temperature a box will hold is a twenty-degree band with three named dependencies and no formula: “Your insulated box will maintain a temperature of anywhere from 70°F – 90°F. This temperature will depend on size of box, box insulation value, and size of desired shipping warmer.” And its answer to whether a pack will keep an animal alive in a cold snap is not a number at all. It is an instruction to go and find out yourself, which we will come back to.

What Each Publisher Actually Publishes

Every cell below is what that source’s own page states, read on August 15, 2026. Where a source does not address something, the cell says so rather than borrowing an answer from another row.

None of those four is wrong in any way we can demonstrate. Product lines change, national suppliers stock different subsets, and a reseller’s boilerplate can be years old. What matters for a reader is the practical consequence: the pack you can actually buy is decided by the seller in front of you, not by a ladder you read somewhere else, and the duration you plan around should be the one printed on the packet you own.

The temperature figures, and the box every one of them assumes

This is the table to read slowly, because the fourth column is the one that gets dropped everywhere else.

Read down the fourth column and the pattern is unmissable. Every temperature figure in the table above describes either the pack’s own surface or the inside of a closed, insulated, roughly one-cubic-foot shipping box. Not one of them describes a terrarium.

The Contradictions, Product by Product

This section is the reason this page exists. Everything above is available in pieces if you visit enough product pages. What we did not find published anywhere is the comparison, and the comparison changes what you should do.

One pack, four answers about surface temperature

The UniHeat 40-hour shipping warmer is, on Pangea’s own description, “the most popular type for shipping reptiles, amphibians, and insect shipping.” Here is what four publishers say its surface does.

A peak and an average are different measurements, so 110 and 100 are not strictly in conflict. The chart is the problem. A curve whose high point sits just under 150°F is roughly 40 degrees above the peak figure Pangea publishes for the same product, and the chart is not a third party’s estimate. It is the manufacturer’s own published document, and the manufacturer’s own product pages label it as surface temperature in so many words.

We are not going to resolve that for you by picking one, because picking one would be asserting the others are wrong on evidence nobody published. What we will do is state the consequence, and the consequence is entirely one-directional. If you were planning around 110°F and the manufacturer’s chart is right, you were planning 40 degrees low on a surface you were considering putting near an animal. Nothing in the disagreement makes a barrier less necessary. It makes it more.

One pack, three peak times

Thirty to forty minutes, per UniHeat USA. Seven to ten hours, reading the manufacturer’s own chart. Seventeen to nineteen hours, per Pangea. And the brand’s Canadian FAQ describing a slow release over the first two to four hours with peak temperatures taking several hours after that.

The practical rule that falls out of this is not a number, it is a margin. If your plan involves a pack being at temperature by a particular moment, activate it much earlier than the shortest published figure suggests, and verify with a thermometer rather than a clock. UniHeat’s own testing instruction assumes exactly that kind of lead time: “It is recommended you allow shipping warmer to heat up in a towel for at least 30-60 minutes.”

One step, three incompatible multi-pack rules

Adding a second pack is the single most common thing a keeper does when one is not enough, and here is what the three publishers who address it say.

Ten degrees, five degrees, or do not do it. Note also that UniHeat Canada’s figure is published as “5 degrees” without a unit, on a page that elsewhere mixes Celsius and Fahrenheit in adjacent sentences, so even the size of that step is not unambiguous from the source.

Two of the three are increments measured inside a closed insulated box of about one cubic foot. Extending an increment measured in one cubic foot of sealed polystyrene to a 16-cubic-foot enclosure with a screen top is not interpolation, it is a sixteen-fold extrapolation across a different boundary condition, and none of the three publishers above makes it. This page will not publish a packs-per-enclosure figure for hitting a target temperature, and you should treat any page that hands you one as having made the model up.

The same sentence, running in opposite directions

Here is a small one that says a lot about how much of this material is copied rather than measured. UniHeat Canada’s own 40-hour product page describes the pack as giving “Steady and deliberate heat release within the first 2-4 hours, followed by a gradual heat decrease.” SaltwaterAquarium.com’s listing for the same 40-hour pack carries what is otherwise the same sentence, and it reads “Steady and deliberate heat release within the first 2-4 hours, followed by a gradual heat increase”.

Decrease on the manufacturer’s page, increase on the reseller’s. One of those is a transcription error, and the manufacturer’s own chart settles which behaviour is real, since both charts rise to a peak and then fall. What it should settle for a reader is how much weight to put on a spec line that appears identically on several sites: identical wording across pages is evidence of copying, not of confirmation.

The same manufacturer, two strengths of the same warning

SnuggleSafe supplies the cleanest example of a source disagreeing with itself, and it matters because the weaker version is the one on the page a buyer reads first.

The official instruction sheet, in a boxed panel headed VETERINARY USE, states: “We do not recommend the use of the heatpad with anesthetized or unconscious animals because they cannot react to thermal discomfort and this could result in skin burns.”

The manufacturer’s own shop page, describing the same product, states: “We advise using the heatpad with CAUTION when working with unattended anaesthetized animals, just like with any other heat source product. If using a heat-sourced product with recovering and immobile animals, they should be closely watched to make sure they can move freely and away from the heat as needed. This is typical procedure for any heat source that is utilised, not only our heatpad.”

Do not recommend, on the sheet in the box. Use with caution, on the website. Those are different instructions for the same situation, and the one printed on the document that ships with the product is the stronger of the two. When a manufacturer publishes two versions of a safety statement, the correct move is to act on the more restrictive one, which is this page’s own position rather than either document’s instruction about how to read the other.

Reading the Manufacturer’s Own Charts

UniHeat publishes temperature-versus-time charts for its packs, and its Canadian FAQ points readers at them: “Please view our graphs on the times it takes to reach peak temperatures of desired shipping warmer of choice.” They are the closest thing to primary data in this entire product category, and they deserve to be described carefully, including their limits.

What they are. Two 600 by 600 pixel JPEG images, one per pack, embedded on the brand’s Canadian product pages. Each plots a single curve with the y-axis labelled Temperature °F running from 60 to 180 with gridlines every 30 degrees, and an x-axis labelled with the source’s own spelling, “Continous Warmth on the Hour”.

What the manufacturer says they show. Both product pages carry the same caption directly beneath: “Please Note: The graph reflects only the surface temperature of the shipping warmer. The inside of your box will maintain a comfortable warmth, if used appropriately.” That is the manufacturer telling you, in its own words, that the plotted line is surface temperature and that it is not the temperature the contents of the box experience.

What the curves do, read off the plot. On the 40-hour chart the curve climbs steeply from about 60°F at hour zero, is already high within the first few hours, reaches its high point just below the 150°F gridline somewhere around hours 7 to 10, holds a long shallow decline through the middle of the run, is still well above the 120°F gridline at hour 30, and then falls away to somewhere near the 90°F gridline at the 40-hour mark. On the 72-hour chart the shape is the same and stretched: a steep rise, a high point a little below the 40-hour pack’s around hours 12 to 22, roughly 120°F at hour 60, and roughly 85°F out at hour 80.

How much precision these support, stated honestly. These are values read off a plotted curve against gridlines spaced 30 degrees apart, not entries in a numeric table. They are approximate by construction, and this page publishes them as ranges and as roughly-figures for exactly that reason. Do not treat them as spec-sheet values, and do not use them as inputs to a runtime or a temperature calculation. The one operation this page performs on them is the rough subtraction in the contradictions section above, which says only that the chart’s high point sits about 40 degrees above Pangea’s published peak. That comparison is deliberately approximate, it runs in the conservative direction, and the only conclusion drawn from it is that you need a barrier.

Retrieval status. Both images are hosted on uniheat.ca and are embedded on that site’s own product pages, which is where the FAQ’s pointer leads. We did not locate a second independent host serving the same charts, and a check of the Internet Archive on August 15, 2026 returned no capture of either image URL. Under this site’s standing rule that a figure is settled only by a second retrieval on a different route, the peak values above rest on one route. What corroborates them indirectly is that UniHeat USA describes the 40-hour pack as having a “higher peak temperature” without quantifying it, and that the reseller boilerplate describes a heat release profile with a peak and a decline. What contradicts them is Pangea’s 110-degree figure. Both are on the record above.

What the curves change about the rating

Two things, and they cut in opposite directions.

A rated duration is not a cliff. The 72-hour curve is still up around 120°F at hour 60 and still around 85°F at hour 80, which is eight hours past the rating. Output tapers rather than stopping. That is a reason not to treat the rated hour as a moment when heat vanishes.

A rated duration is also not a floor. UniHeat’s own description of an open environment is that a pack there “will feel slightly warm to the touch, but there is too large of an open air environment for it to properly warm up.” In a large ventilated enclosure, the useful contribution can be small or absent from the beginning, regardless of what the curve does in a closed box. Pangea makes the same point from the testing angle, warning that if you just set a pack on a table you will feel almost nothing “because the air volume surrounding the heat pack is much greater than the heat being released in the initial stage.”

Put those together and the phrase hours of usable heat turns out to have no fixed meaning for an enclosure. The pack has a duration. Whether any of it is usable where you put it is a separate question that the manufacturer answers by telling you to test it.

The Variables, With Directions and No Coefficients

This section replaces the calculator. For each input, what direction it pushes and the source that establishes the direction. No coefficient, because none of the publishers read for this page gives one.

Read them together rather than one at a time, and notice what the table cannot do. Every row has a direction and a source. Not one row has a number you could multiply by. That is not this page being coy. It is the state of the published record, and a table with numbers in that last column would be a table somebody made up.

The Scope Problem: A Terrarium Is Not a Shipping Box

Worth its own section, because it is the assumption underneath every figure above.

The reference container is about one cubic foot, closed, and insulated. UniHeat’s temperature figure names it: “inside a standard insulated 1 cubic foot shipping box.” Pangea’s gain figures name it: “In a 1 cubic foot insulated box”. UniHeat’s rule of thumb names it: “1 shipping warmer to 1 cubic foot of insulated box.”

A common adult reptile enclosure is not close to that. A four-foot by two-foot by two-foot enclosure is sixteen cubic feet of interior volume, and a great many of them have a screen top, which is the opposite of a sealed insulated wall. The gap between the reference container and the real one is not a rounding difference.

The manufacturer disqualifies the open case directly. The FAQ’s own description of what happens outside a box is the sentence quoted twice already, and it is worth reading as a scope statement rather than as a testing tip: a warmer in an open room “will feel slightly warm to the touch, but there is too large of an open air environment for it to properly warm up.”

And the manufacturer disqualifies the placement. UniHeat’s FAQ, in the same numbered list as its packing instructions: “DO NOT place shipping warmer directly on or beside sensitive living things, as they may be harmed.”

And then it disclaims the outcome the whole question is about. The FAQ’s closing paragraph: “In conclusion shipping warmers are not guaranteed to keep animals or plants alive in extreme cold weather spells, as there are many variables to consider. It is always best to run some trial-and-error tests before hand. This will ensure you have a good understanding of how the shipping warmers work and what to expect.”

That last sentence deserves to be read as what it is: the manufacturer’s own prescribed method. It is not a lookup, it is not a formula, and it is not a calculator. It is run the test yourself, on your own setup, before you need it. A page that answers this question with a computed number is not just going beyond the evidence, it is contradicting the method the manufacturer itself prescribes.

None of this means the packs are useless in an enclosure. Pangea, which sells them to reptile keepers, describes what they are for in a sentence that is more honest than most product copy: “The idea of using heat packs for shipping is not to achieve the optimal temperature inside the box but to keep the temperature from falling so low that it causes the animal to be overly stressed or die.” That is a floor-holding device, in a container, for a bounded period, with the animal’s fate still depending on many other things. Read that way, a pack is a legitimate bridge. Read as a heater with an hours figure, it is a false promise.

Burns: The Half of This Question Nobody Calculates

Everything above is about how long. This section is about a risk that does not scale with duration at all, and it is the part of the question that a runtime figure hides.

What the clinical sources publish

The Merck Veterinary Manual’s reptile husbandry chapter, last reviewed in July 2025, sets the standard for supplemental heat in a reptile enclosure in one sentence: “Heaters of an appropriate size should be thermostat controlled, screened from the animals, and positioned toward one end of the enclosure to provide a thermal gradient.” Its next sentence names a product category outright, writing that hot rocks, in Merck’s own quotation marks, “frequently result in burns in larger animals and should be avoided.”

Hold that first sentence against a chemical pack. Thermostat controlled: a pack has no control loop of any kind, and its output rises and falls on the curve above whether you want it to or not. Screened from the animals: possible, and it is the only one of the three you can supply yourself. Positioned to provide a thermal gradient: possible in principle. So a pack fails the first requirement outright and can satisfy the other two only if you arrange them. That is a statement about what the device is, and it is not a criticism of an emergency bridge, but it does mean a pack is not a substitute for the setup Merck describes once power is back.

PetMD’s article on thermal burns in reptiles, written by a licensed veterinary technician and reviewed by Sean Perry, DVM, supplies the physiology. On why reptiles do not protect themselves: “While the exact reason is unknown, studies suggest that their receptors for heat and pain may be separate, as reptiles fail to readily withdraw from heating sources that are dangerously hot.” It continues: “As such, they may get too close to heat sources and not move away from areas that are damagingly hot to their skin and tissues.” And on why you may not notice in time: “Because it can take a few days for a thermal injury to fully set in, pet reptiles may not perceive discomfort in the moment of the heat injury itself. This is most often how they get burned.”

The same page publishes what a burn looks like, by degree, and those lists are worth having in front of you rather than in a search bar at 2am. For first-degree burns PetMD lists reddening of the skin, a bruised appearance under the scales, small blisters, and a singed appearance of the scales. For second-degree it lists pain, expressed as a hunched posture, abnormal behavior, squinting eyes, decreased movement, guarding painful areas or decreased appetite, along with blistering, oozing and discoloration. For third-degree it lists charring or blackening of the skin, white discoloration of the scales, and deep and extensive wounds. On recovery, the same page states that “Reptile burns can take weeks to months to heal, so diligent caregiving and patience are essential.”

This page does not tell you how to treat any of that, and would be wrong to. A suspected burn is a veterinary visit.

What the manufacturers publish about contact

Three of them address it, and none of them says a pack should touch an animal.

UniHeat, for non-shipping uses of its packs: “follow standard heat pack safety practices, avoid direct prolonged skin contact, and do not place inside airtight containers since the warming process requires oxygen.” And in the FAQ, more directly: “DO NOT place shipping warmer directly on or beside sensitive living things, as they may be harmed.”

SnuggleSafe, in its instruction sheet: “Do not place an uncovered SnuggleSafe in direct contact with your pet’s body as this might cause skin burns in some circumstances. Do not use with any animal that is unconscious or otherwise unable to react to thermal discomfort.” Its veterinary panel goes further: “A SnuggleSafe heatpad must never come into direct contact with an animal. At all times the heatpad should be fitted with a cover, or suitable bedding should be placed between it and the animal.”

PetMD, on the closest analogous device: “Under-tank heating pads can be helpful for larger, non-climbing reptiles, but there needs to be adequate substrate between the reptile and the tank floor, creating the appropriate distance and barrier between the animal’s skin and the heated area. The more precisely the heating pad can be monitored and regulated, the safer.”

The join, and it is this site’s own

Here is the part that none of the sources above publishes, made explicitly as this site’s reasoning rather than as anybody’s protocol.

SnuggleSafe declines to recommend its pad for animals that “cannot react to thermal discomfort and this could result in skin burns.” PetMD publishes that reptiles “fail to readily withdraw from heating sources that are dangerously hot.” Neither document is about the other. SnuggleSafe is writing about anaesthetized and unconscious patients in a veterinary setting, and PetMD is writing about ordinary conscious pet reptiles under a heat lamp.

Putting them together is ours: a reptile is, functionally, the animal SnuggleSafe’s exclusion describes, and it is that animal all the time rather than only under anaesthesia. The self-protective behaviour that every consumer heat product’s safety case quietly assumes, that the animal will move away when it gets too hot, is exactly the behaviour PetMD says reptiles do not reliably perform.

Two consequences follow, and we state them as our conclusions rather than as sourced instructions. First, a barrier between any heat source and a reptile is not a refinement, it is the whole safety mechanism, because the animal’s own avoidance is not available to back it up. Second, the disagreement about surface temperature earlier on this page stops being an academic dispute: when the published figures for one pack range from about 100°F to something near 150°F, and the animal will not move away from whichever it turns out to be, you have to design for the top of the range.

The Restock Question, Answered as a Rule

The nearest thing to arithmetic in this whole category is a stocking rule, and it is deliberately boring. What the manufacturer publishes is a size choice rather than a pack count: “Calculate how many days the shipment will be in transit and choose the appropriate shipping warmer size based on the number of hours anticipated.” Transit hours in, pack size out.

Divide the hours you expect to be without your normal heat source by the pack’s rated hours, and round up. That division is ours, transposed from the manufacturer’s transit sizing instruction to an outage, and we label it as ours because UniHeat publishes no pack-count formula of any kind.

So a household planning against a 72-hour outage window and buying 40-hour packs needs to stock two per placement to cover the window in sequence, activating the second only when the first has expired, never a second pack running alongside the first: UniHeat USA states “To avoid overheating, use only one heat pack per shipment.” A household buying 72-hour packs needs one. That is the whole calculation, and the counting is the site’s own while the sizing instruction under it is the manufacturer’s.

Three things do not enter it, and it matters that you can see they are absent rather than assume they were folded in.

Your enclosure volume does not enter it, because none of the publishers read for this page connects volume to duration. Volume appears in UniHeat’s list of things that “influence actual performance”, which is a different claim.

Your insulation does not enter it, for the same reason. UniHeat’s published statements about insulation and duration are qualitative: uninsulated containers give a pack “a shorter life”, with no quantity attached.

Your room temperature does not enter it, except at the freezing end, where it stops being a modifier and becomes a cut-off.

And one thing it is not, stated as plainly as we can: this is a number for a drawer, not a promise about an animal. Having enough packs to cover 72 hours is a claim about your supply cupboard. It is not a claim that the animal is safe for 72 hours, and the manufacturer’s own disclaimer says so: shipping warmers “are not guaranteed to keep animals or plants alive in extreme cold weather spells, as there are many variables to consider.”

The freeze floor, which runs the other way

Every other variable on this page makes a pack work a bit better or a bit worse. This one can take it to zero, and it lands in precisely the scenario a reptile keeper stocks packs for.

Pangea publishes: “If the temperature in the shipping box falls below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, the disposable heat pad may stop working because the water in the heat pack may freeze.” SaltwaterAquarium.com’s listing for UniHeat’s 40-hour pack publishes the same limit through a second, independent route: “Warmer MAY STOP working if temps inside the shipping box or area falls below 32 degrees F”. UniHeat approaches the same boundary from above, listing its 40-hour pack as “Best above 35°F ambient conditions”, and describing packs that arrive frozen from winter transit with the instruction that “Once received and frozen you must NOT open the shipping warmer. Please allow the shipping warmer to warm up for several hours before opening and using.”

Note the modal verb in both seller statements. May stop, not will stop. That is a stated risk rather than a stated threshold, and neither seller publishes a recovery time or a temperature at which output resumes.

The planning consequence is the uncomfortable one this page has been circling. A multi-day winter outage in an unheated space is the situation these packs get bought for, and it is also the situation in which their published performance is least dependable. That is an argument for solving the problem a different way while you still can, which brings us to the last section.

What to Do Instead of Computing an Hour

Four things, none of which requires a number nobody has published.

1. Measure your building rather than modelling it. Our aquarium and reptile power outage guide carries the procedure in full: two temperature readings an hour apart, and the difference is degrees per hour for your room, your insulation and today’s weather. That measurement already contains the variables a calculator would have to guess at. What it cannot supply is the number to divide toward, and our indoor temperature decay guide explains why that half of the calculation is missing from the published record. Use the rate to decide whether to act early. Never use it to justify waiting.

2. Test one pack in your own enclosure on a quiet afternoon. This is the manufacturer’s own instruction rather than our invention, and UniHeat even describes the method it uses for testing a pack by itself: open it, wrap it in a cloth bath towel, in a room at 65 to 70°F, and give it the interval UniHeat states, which is “at least 30-60 minutes” rather than a few minutes. Doing the equivalent in the enclosure you actually own, with a thermometer where the animal actually sits, produces a figure that is worth more than every published number on this page, because it is about your setup. It also has to be done in advance, since it takes hours and cannot be run during the emergency it prepares you for.

Run that test with the enclosure empty, or with the animal in a separate secure container, and put the animal back only after you know what the thermometer reads. That precaution is ours rather than the manufacturer’s, and it follows from three things already on this page. UniHeat says not to place a warmer on or beside sensitive living things. PetMD says a reptile will not reliably move away from a surface that is dangerously hot. And PetMD also says a thermal injury can take days to fully set in, so nothing you saw during the test would tell you it had gone wrong. A test on a normal day is a test the animal does not need to be present for. When a pack is actually in service rather than under test, keep a barrier between it and any surface the animal can touch.

3. Ask your veterinarian for the two things this page cannot give you. The temperature range that fits your individual animal and species, and the warning signs that mean stop waiting. That is not a formality. The professional body for reptile and amphibian veterinarians had no owner care guide on its own public Care Guides page, which read “Coming Soon” on August 15, 2026, and its own note to owners is “Please note that we cannot consult on veterinary medical cases or give medical advice by phone or e-mail.” Species care sheets carrying that body’s name do exist away from that page, and they are worth looking for. A California veterinary practice publishes ten of them under the heading “Basic Care Sheets for Various Reptiles and Amphibians Provided by the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV and ARAV.org)”, and the bearded dragon sheet in that series does publish a temperature range: “Ensure a gradient of temperatures in their enclosure, from 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) on the cool side to 90 degrees F (32 degrees C) on the warm side with a hot basking spot of around 100 degrees F (38 degrees C).” We opened that sheet on August 15, 2026 on the practice’s own host, not on arav.org, and the copy served there carries an update credit dated 2015, so read it as a starting point rather than as current guidance. If a sheet exists for your species, read it, and then still ask your veterinarian, because a species sheet cannot tell you what your individual animal will tolerate. Its answer is a veterinarian, and so is ours.

4. Decide in advance where the animal goes if the house stops holding heat. Relocation is the one option here that stops depending on a heat source you have to keep supplying, and it is the one that gets harder the longer you defer it. If you are looking at backup power rather than chemical heat, note what you would actually be powering. A reptile heat source that satisfies Merck’s standard is a thermostat plus a heating element, and that is a real electrical load rather than the sub-two-watt draw of an aquarium air pump. Your Heat Pack Checklist

  • Read the duration printed on the packet you actually own, not a ladder you found online. Four publishers name four different duration line-ups for this brand, and the seller in front of you decides what you can buy.
  • Write the pack’s rated hours and its best-before date on the outside of the box you store them in. UniHeat prints a best-before date on each product page, and states that its packs are single use.
  • Do the stocking arithmetic once, in advance: expected outage hours divided by rated hours, rounded up. That division is this site’s own rather than a manufacturer’s formula. Treat the result as a supply figure, not as hours of safety for the animal, and stock the packs to run one after another rather than together.
  • Test one pack in your own enclosure on a normal day, with the animal out of the enclosure and a thermometer where the animal actually sits, and put the animal back only after you know what the thermometer reads. Testing in advance is the manufacturer’s own prescribed method; removing the animal for the test is ours, because a reptile will not reliably move away from a surface that is too hot and a burn can take days to show. It is the only figure on this subject that will be about your setup.
  • Keep a barrier between any heat source and the animal, every time. A reptile will not reliably move away from a surface that is too hot, per PetMD, so the barrier is doing the job the animal’s own avoidance cannot.
  • Never seal a chemical pack in an airtight container, and never let the red-striped vent face get covered or taped over. The reaction consumes oxygen, and the vents are how it gets it.
  • Keep packs dry. UniHeat states that exposure to water permanently deactivates them.
  • Do not stack packs to hit a target temperature. Three publishers give three incompatible answers about the second pack, and one of them says to use only one.
  • If the space around the pack can fall below freezing, plan for the pack to stop. Two sellers publish that limit, and neither publishes a recovery time.
  • Never substitute a human hand warmer, in a sealed enclosure or an open one. The prohibition and both of its reasons are on our aquarium and reptile outage guide.
  • Write down your veterinarian’s number and your species’ normal temperature range on paper, before the phone is dead and the search bar is the only thing you have.
  • Decide now, not at hour thirty, where you would take the animal if the house stops holding heat.
  • After a burn or a suspected burn, call a veterinarian. PetMD publishes the sign lists by degree, and also that these injuries can take weeks to months to heal.

How We Sourced This Page

This page is document analysis. Every figure on it comes from a manufacturer’s own site, a reseller’s product page, a veterinary reference, a veterinary practice’s own resource page or a professional body’s own page, each opened and read on August 15, 2026. We have not tested any of these products, we do not sell them, and we take no sponsorship. Where two documents disagree, both appear above with the publisher named, and this page does not pick a winner between them, because picking one would mean asserting the other is wrong on evidence nobody published.

Three sourcing limits are worth stating rather than hiding.

The temperature charts rest on one retrieval route. They are hosted on and embedded in the brand’s Canadian site, which is where the brand’s own FAQ points. We found no second independent host, and an Internet Archive lookup on August 15, 2026 returned no capture of either image URL. The values above are read off a plotted curve against gridlines spaced 30 degrees apart, and are published here as approximate ranges for that reason.

One document we wanted was unreachable. ShipYourReptiles, a large US reptile shipping operator whose guidance would be a natural place to look for pack-count guidance by outside temperature, returned an HTTP 500 error on August 15, 2026 for the heat-pack product page we tried. That is a retrieval gap and nothing more. It is not evidence about what that operator publishes, and this page makes no claim about it.

The SnuggleSafe instruction sheet is a scanned image. Its PDF contains one image and no extractable text, so it was read visually. It is transcribed here as carefully as we can, including the fact that the scan’s final lines under the cleaning heading are cut off at the bottom edge of the image. Anything in that cut-off region is unknown to us.

One correction to a claim that circulates about this product category, made here because we checked it rather than inherited it: SnuggleSafe’s duration figure is published by the manufacturer, not only by retailers. The instruction sheet carries no duration figure anywhere we could read on it, but Lenric C21’s own website states that the pad “lasts for up to 10 hours”. Two documents from one manufacturer, one of which is silent, is not the same thing as a manufacturer being silent.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a heat pack last in a reptile enclosure?

As long as the manufacturer's rating says it lasts as a pack, which is a different question from how long it does anything useful in your enclosure, and no manufacturer or veterinary source located in this research publishes the second figure. UniHeat USA states that it supplies seven durations from 20 to 120 hours. Pangea Reptile publishes that its 40-hour pack activates "in approximately 40-50 minutes" and "peaks between 17 and 19 hours", and that 72-hour packs "activate slowly, up to 3 hours" and reach peak "in approximately 24 hours." Every temperature figure attached to those durations is scoped to a closed insulated shipping box of about one cubic foot, and a ventilated terrarium is not that container: UniHeat's own FAQ says a pack in an open room has "too large of an open air environment for it to properly warm up." So the honest answer has two halves. The rated hours are real and published. The conversion into hours of usable warmth for your specific enclosure is arithmetic that no manufacturer, reseller or veterinary source read for this page performs, and a page that hands you that number has invented the model behind it. The manufacturer's own instruction is to test your own setup in advance: "It is always best to run some trial-and-error tests before hand." Run that test with the animal out of the enclosure, which is our precaution rather than the manufacturer's, because a reptile will not reliably move away from a surface that is too hot and a burn can take days to show. If your animal is currently without heat, that is a veterinary and husbandry question rather than a product question, and a species-experienced veterinarian is the person to ask.

How hot does a reptile shipping heat pack actually get on the surface?

The publishers disagree, by a wide margin, about the same product, and that disagreement is the most useful thing to know before you put one near an animal. Read on August 15, 2026: Pangea Reptile publishes "The surface temperature is about 110 degrees at its peak" for the 40-hour pack. SaltwaterAquarium.com, a reseller listing for the same pack, publishes "Provides an average warmer surface temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit." UniHeat publishes temperature-versus-time charts for its 40-hour and 72-hour packs, and its Canadian product pages label them: "Please Note: The graph reflects only the surface temperature of the shipping warmer." Read off those charts against gridlines spaced 30°F apart, the 40-hour curve peaks just under the 150°F line and the 72-hour curve peaks a little below that. UniHeat USA's own 40-hour page publishes no surface number at all. Because the published figures range from about 100°F to something near 150°F for one pack, the safe way to treat any of them is as a reason for a barrier rather than as a contact temperature you can rely on. UniHeat itself states "DO NOT place shipping warmer directly on or beside sensitive living things, as they may be harmed", and for non-shipping uses tells buyers to "avoid direct prolonged skin contact".

Can I use a hand warmer instead of a reptile heat pack if that is all I have?

No. Our aquarium and reptile outage guide publishes that prohibition in full, with both reasons, and it is unconditional there rather than limited to sealed enclosures. What this page adds is that the manufacturer of the shipping warmers draws the same distinction in its own words, on its own site: UniHeat USA writes that "Hand warmers are designed for short bursts of high heat over a few hours", while its shipping warmers are "formulated for lower-temperature heat over much longer periods ranging from 20 to 120 hours, making them ideal for shipping and multi-day cold-weather situations." HotHands, a widely available air-activated hand warmer brand, publishes on its brand site a duration of "Up To 10 Hours (actual duration depends on usage and storage conditions)", an "Average Temperature: 135 °F (57 °C)" and a "Maximum Temperature: 158 °F (70 °C)". Those are the manufacturer's own figures for a product engineered to sit inside a glove against a human palm. Note also that the two product types run on the same family of chemistry, so neither one is safe to seal in an airtight container: HotHands describes warmers "producing heat through oxidation when exposed to air", and UniHeat instructs buyers not to "place inside airtight containers since the warming process requires oxygen." If an animal is cold right now and you have no purpose-built pack, call a veterinarian or relocate the animal to a warm place rather than substituting a hand warmer.

How many heat packs should I put in an enclosure to raise it a certain number of degrees?

This page will not give you that number, because the three sources that address multi-pack use give three different answers and none of them is written for an enclosure. Pangea Reptile publishes, for a shipping box: "In a 1 cubic foot insulated box, the first heat pack will raise the temperature approximately 12-16 degrees. Each additional heat pack will raise the temperature about an additional 10 degrees." UniHeat's Canadian FAQ publishes a different figure for the same step: "A good rule of thumb is 1 shipping warmer to 1 cubic foot of insulated box. This works very well for mild seasonal temperatures of up to -15 Celsius. Additional warmers can be added to the box. Each additional shipping warmer will increase the overall inside temperature by 5 degrees." UniHeat USA's own 40-hour page contradicts the premise of stacking outright: "Using one heat pack per shipment is recommended to maintain safe temperature levels and avoid overheating." Twelve to sixteen degrees, plus ten per pack; plus five per pack; or use only one. All three are scoped to a closed insulated box of about one cubic foot, and interpolating any of them out to a larger, ventilated enclosure would be an extrapolation none of the publishers makes. A reptile enclosure needs a thermostat-controlled, screened heat source under normal conditions, per the Merck Veterinary Manual, and a chemical pack cannot be either of those things.

Do heat packs stop working in freezing weather?

Two independent sellers publish that they can, and the reason is that there is water inside the pack. Pangea Reptile states: "If the temperature in the shipping box falls below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, the disposable heat pad may stop working because the water in the heat pack may freeze." SaltwaterAquarium.com's listing for UniHeat's 40-hour pack states: "Warmer MAY STOP working if temps inside the shipping box or area falls below 32 degrees F". UniHeat's own guidance points the same direction from the other side, listing its 40-hour pack as "Best above 35°F ambient conditions", and its Canadian FAQ describes packs arriving frozen in winter transit with the instruction that "Once received and frozen you must NOT open the shipping warmer. Please allow the shipping warmer to warm up for several hours before opening and using." Note both sellers use may rather than will, so this is a stated risk rather than a stated threshold, and neither publishes a recovery time or a temperature at which output resumes. The planning consequence is uncomfortable and worth stating plainly: the long winter outage in an unheated space is both the scenario people stock these packs for and the scenario in which their rated hours are least reliable. Treat relocating the animal to a heated place as a real option rather than a last resort, and ask your veterinarian in advance what your species needs.

Is a microwave heat pad like a SnuggleSafe safer than a chemical pack for a reptile?

It is a different set of tradeoffs rather than a straightforwardly safer one, and the manufacturer's own paperwork is where the real answer sits. Lenric C21, which makes SnuggleSafe, publishes on its website that the pad "lasts for up to 10 hours" and that it "can ONLY be heated by a microwave oven", which in a power outage means it is unavailable until you have a working microwave. Its official instruction sheet carries a wattage-indexed heating table rather than one time, running from 8 minutes at 600 to 650 watts down to 2 and a half minutes at 1,300 to 1,400 watts, and a caution reading "The bottle will be hot. (Surface temperature approx 65°C / 149°F)." That is in the same range as the chemical packs, not below it. The sheet also instructs: "Do not place an uncovered SnuggleSafe in direct contact with your pet's body as this might cause skin burns in some circumstances. Do not use with any animal that is unconscious or otherwise unable to react to thermal discomfort." SnuggleSafe markets the pad for cats, dogs, rabbits and other small animals rather than for reptiles, so reptile use is outside what the manufacturer describes. The one durable advantage is that it holds no chemistry that oxygen or freezing can interrupt, and the one durable disadvantage is that it needs mains power to recharge.

Why do the manufacturer's own charts and its own product pages give different peak times?

Because three publishers describe the same pack and their figures have not been reconciled with each other. For the UniHeat 40-hour pack, read on August 15, 2026: UniHeat USA's product page states it "typically reaches peak temperature within 30–40 minutes after activation." Pangea Reptile states it "peaks between 17 and 19 hours." UniHeat's own published temperature chart for the 40-hour pack shows the curve reaching its high point somewhere around hours 7 to 10 when read against the plotted gridlines. The brand's Canadian FAQ says something different again about the warm-up, that packs are "designed to release heat slowly for the first 2- 4 hours" and "will take several hours to reach peek temperatures", reproducing the source's own spelling. The spread runs from well under an hour to nearly a day. This page does not pick a winner among them, because picking one would mean asserting the others are wrong on evidence nobody published. What the disagreement is good for is a planning rule: if you are relying on a pack to be at temperature by a particular moment, activate it far earlier than the shortest published figure suggests, and confirm with a thermometer rather than a clock.

What should I do instead of calculating heat pack hours for my enclosure?

Measure your own room rather than model it, keep the animal's clock and the device's clock separate, and treat symptoms as outranking both. The measurement procedure is on our aquarium and reptile outage guide: take two temperature readings an hour apart, and the difference is degrees per hour for your building, today, which already contains your insulation, your volume and your weather. What that arithmetic cannot supply is the temperature to divide toward, because as our indoor temperature decay guide sets out, no veterinary body or federal agency located in that research publishes an hour at which a house without power becomes dangerous for a given animal. So use the rate to decide whether to act early, never to justify waiting. Three things are worth doing before an outage rather than during one. Ask your veterinarian, in advance, what temperature range and warning signs apply to your individual animal and species. Test one pack in your own enclosure on a normal day, which is the manufacturer's own instruction: "It is always best to run some trial-and-error tests before hand." Run that test with the enclosure empty, or with the animal in a separate secure container, and put the animal back only after you know what the thermometer reads. That precaution is ours rather than the manufacturer's, and the reason is that a test on a normal day is a test the animal does not need to be present for: PetMD publishes that reptiles do not reliably withdraw from heating sources that are dangerously hot, and that it can take a few days for a thermal injury to fully set in, so nothing you saw during the test would tell you it had gone wrong. When a pack is actually in service, keep a barrier between it and any surface the animal can touch. And decide in advance where you would take the animal if the house stops holding heat, because relocation is the option that stops depending on a chemical pouch entirely.
