The catch is honest: you need a working microwave to recharge it, so it is most useful once a generator is running or grid power partly returns, and it is a scheduled-recharge item rather than a set-and-forget one.
Place it under one end of the enclosure only, never wall to wall, so the hedgehog can always move to a cooler side if it gets too warm. Never let the disc sit directly against the animal, and never rely on it as your only plan for a multi-day outage.
3. Air-activated shipping heat packs: multi-day warmth
For a genuinely long outage or evacuation, an air-activated shipping heat pack fills the gap the disc cannot. UniHeat rates its packs for durations from 20 to 120 hours, with a 72-hour pack averaging roughly 70 degrees inside a standard insulated box. There is no battery, charge, or microwave dependency at all.
Two safety rules matter here, both stated by UniHeat. First, these packs are air-activated and must not be placed inside airtight containers, because the reaction needs oxygen. Inside a closed carrier that cuts two ways: the hedgehog is breathing that same air, and a warmer pressed against the animal can burn it. Second, avoid direct prolonged contact. Always wrap the pack in a towel or sock barrier and position it so the hedgehog cannot climb onto or against it. A shipping pack heats the space around insulation, it is not meant to lie against a living animal.
4. Body heat: the last resort for a chilling animal
If a hedgehog is already showing signs of chilling and you have no other warmth, skin-to-skin body heat through a towel, held against your chest, warms the animal gradually while you get to a vet. This is a rescue step, not a plan, and it belongs alongside the phone call rather than replacing it.
The rule that ties all four together: watch the enclosure temperature, because for this species an unwatched heat source is its own hazard. That is why the thermometer is not optional.
The Feeding and Care Specifics
Heat is the emergency, but a multi-day event still needs the ordinary supplies, packed the hedgehog way.
Food. Per VCA, a pet hedgehog’s diet should mainly consist of high-quality hedgehog food mixed with high-quality, low-fat cat food, with small amounts of gut-loaded insects like mealworms and crickets, and occasional fresh produce or hard-boiled egg. Pack the familiar diet; do not grab a substitute in a panic, since a stressed animal on strange food is a second problem you do not need. A sudden diet change on top of an evacuation is exactly the kind of stress worth avoiding.
Water. VCA says water should be available 24 hours a day. Pack a spill-resistant bottle and a shallow bowl, and store several days of water per the general kit standards below.
A hide. Hedgehogs want a dark place to retreat into, and a hide inside the carrier turns a bright, exposed box into something closer to safe. It doubles as a scent cue from home. A familiar hide or piece of bedding is a small stress reducer that costs nothing to pack.
Quill and skin notes. A hedgehog’s quills are not a grooming emergency, but two things are worth having in the kit: a note of any existing skin condition (mites and dry skin are common), and the reminder that a stressed hedgehog balls up tightly. Do not force it open. Warmth and quiet usually relax a balled hedgehog faster than handling does.

- Any chilling or hibernation sign (cool belly or feet, reluctance to uncurl, wobbliness, daytime lethargy, hard to wake): begin gentle warming and call an exotics vet now. Do not wait to see if it perks up.
- Signs of overheating (a hedgehog gone flat and unresponsive in a warm carrier, or a thermometer reading above 85 degrees): remove the heat source, move it to a cooler spot, and call. VCA flags heatstroke as its own danger.
- No exotics vet identified yet: find one before the next cold snap or storm, because a general clinic may not treat hedgehogs at all.
