That scoping matters in both directions: it does not mean a healthy cat is safe, and it does mean the figures are not a timer for one.
  • The environmental triggers the veterinary sources name for a cat that stops eating are, almost item for item, the conditions an evacuation creates. No source we read makes the evacuation connection itself; putting those lists next to a displacement is this site's own reasoning.
  • On water, the strongest line we found that covers cats is species-general. The American Veterinary Medical Association lists "Refusal to drink for 24 hours or more" as one of 13 animal emergencies requiring immediate veterinary consultation or care, and the list is written about "your pet" rather than about any one species. Merck's professional nutrition chapter states that "Water is the most important nutrient; a lack of water can lead to death in a matter of days." and separately that "in general, water intake should not be restricted." None of that is a cat water countdown, and we did not find one.
  • A cat that eats canned food gets a large share of its water from the bowl of food, so an evacuation that changes the food changes the water. Cornell states that "Canned cat food has a moisture content of at least 75 percent, making it a good dietary source of water" and that "Dry food contains between six and 10 percent water." Merck states that "dogs and cats consuming predominantly canned food generally drink less water than those consuming predominantly dry diets." Neither source is writing about evacuations; connecting those to a go-bag swap from wet food to dry is this site's own reasoning, and it is a reason to pack the food your cat already eats.
  • This page does not tell you how to treat a cat that has stopped eating, and it will not teach you a home dehydration test. Every source cited here contains material we deliberately left out: feeding-tube selection, appetite-stimulant drugs, force-feeding technique, fluid protocols and calorie ramps. This site has no veterinary reviewer. Almost all of the published dehydration signs for cats we found appear inside clinical exam guidance for veterinarians, and one of those clinical signs, decreased skin turgor, is described in the peer-reviewed review as "normal in geriatric cats". The one owner-facing exception we found is PetMD's mention of sunken eyes, which it pairs with an instruction to see a veterinarian immediately rather than with any way to grade what you are looking at. Get to a veterinarian rather than assessing at home.

The cat has been under the bed in a motel room since eleven last night. The bowl you put down is untouched. The water looks untouched too, though with water it is genuinely hard to tell. It is now the middle of the next afternoon, the road home is closed, and the question in your head is the one nobody wants to say out loud: how long is this actually fine for?

This page is going to answer that honestly, which means the first thing it does is take away the number you came for.

There is no survival countdown for a cat. Not a good one, not a bad one, not a rough one. What exists instead is a set of published figures that look like a countdown, sit next to each other in search results as though they are versions of the same fact, and are not. Across the thirteen sources listed at the foot of this page, at least seven different durations appear in connection with a cat that has stopped eating. The seven laid out below are the ones this page compares. The shortest applies only to kittens under six weeks old and is 12 hours. The shortest for an adult cat is 24 hours. The longest is several weeks. They differ by more than an order of magnitude, and they differ because they are answers to different questions.

Sorting that out is worth more than a number would be, because at the end of the sorting there is a clear action, and the action is the same whichever figure you started from.

Before anything else: if your cat has not eaten for a day, or has not drunk for a day, that is a call to a veterinarian now, not a wait-and-see. Cornell University’s Feline Health Center states that “anorexia can have a severe impact on a mature cat’s health if it persists for as little as 24 hours.” The American Veterinary Medical Association lists “Refusal to drink for 24 hours or more” among 13 animal emergencies that require immediate veterinary consultation or care. If you are displaced, that means an urgent-care or emergency practice near where you are sheltering, and it means going with your records and any medication in hand. Nothing below is a substitute for that call, and nothing below is a treatment instruction.

Every quotation in it is what that source’s own page states, read on August 15, 2026; the third column is our reading of what each figure measures rather than a claim any source makes about itself. Read down the third column and the illusion collapses. Two of those figures are about when a health impact begins or when to phone somebody, and a third, the kitten figure, is about when food avoidance can be lethal. One describes what was in the histories of cats who arrived at a clinic already sick. Three describe how long a specific liver disease takes to develop or how long the anorexia lasted in cats who had it, and one of those three is about cats that were still eating some food. And Merck’s professional chapter publishes no such figure at all.

None of them is the sentence a frightened owner is looking for, which would be a sentence saying a cat can safely go some number of days without food. That sentence does not exist in this literature, and the peer-reviewed review says why in one word: the duration is “variable”.

What the honest version of the claim is

It would be easy, and wrong, to summarise the table above as a finding that nobody publishes a number. Six sources publish numbers. We went looking specifically to disprove the tidier version of this page and found them.

The true statement is narrower and more useful. No source we opened publishes a survival countdown for a cat. The figures that do exist measure different things, disagree with each other by more than an order of magnitude, and mostly describe cats who were already unwell. The one thing they converge on, and they converge on it hard, is that the veterinary call belongs at the front of the timeline rather than at the end of it.

Why the Search Results Lie About This Particular Question

This is worth its own section, because the topic has an unusually bad information layer and two of its errors carry real authority with them. We checked both directly.

The Merck misattribution. A 2-to-7-day anorexia threshold circulates widely as a Merck Veterinary Manual figure, which would attach it to one of the standard professional references. We downloaded Merck’s professional Feline Hepatic Lipidosis chapter on August 15, 2026 and text-searched the entire body of the page. The string “anorexi” appears exactly once, in the chapter’s opening line: “A primary disease process causing anorexia or food deprivation sets the stage for HL in overconditioned cats.” No duration is attached, there or anywhere else in the chapter. The only day figures in Merck’s professional chapter are treatment and prognosis ones.

The 2-to-7-day figure is real, and it belongs to Clinician’s Brief, in the peer-reviewed article by Garret E. Pachtinger, VMD, DACVECC. What happened is that Merck’s opening sentence and Clinician’s Brief’s parenthetical got welded together somewhere upstream, and the result inherited Merck’s name.

The mink figure. A second claim circulating is a 5-to-7-day critical fasting window, cited to a real paper with a real identifier. The paper is Valtolina and colleagues, “Gene expressions of de novo hepatic lipogenesis in feline hepatic lipidosis”, in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery. The title contains the word feline. The passage does not. We read it: “It was concluded that hepatic DNL could have further exacerbated liver fat accumulation in fasted minks and that 5–7 days of fasting appeared to be the critical time period for this to develop.” The paragraph it sits in opens “The development of hepatic lipidosis has been investigated in the American mink, as a model of NAFLD.” It is a figure about mink, in a paper about cats, and a writer skimming for a number would never know.

The water countdown. We also ran an ordinary web search for how long a cat can go without water while writing this page, and the summary it returned laid out an hour-by-hour timeline and attributed a stage of it to the Cornell Feline Health Center. We then read Cornell’s pages. We did not find that timeline on them. That is a statement about what our search returned and what our reading of Cornell found, not a claim about everything Cornell has ever published, but it is a reason to distrust any hour-by-hour water schedule for a cat that you encounter with a veterinary school’s name on it.

The reason to lay all three out rather than quietly avoid them is that they are the exact answers a worried owner will get in the first thirty seconds of looking. Two of them attach a real institution’s name to a number that institution did not publish. The third attaches a real journal identifier to a figure about a different animal.

What Genuinely Makes a Cat Different

Strip away the fake countdowns and there is a real species difference underneath, and it is worth understanding because it explains why the advice for cats is front-loaded.

The disease. Hepatic lipidosis, sometimes called fatty liver, is the thing all of this circles around. The peer-reviewed review in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, by Craig B Webb of Colorado State University, puts the species point plainly: “Although many species develop a ‘fatty liver’, the cat is one of relatively few species that suffer from HL.” The same abstract describes “the unique and severe nature of a cat’s response to anorexia”. Merck’s cat-owner manual calls it “the most common cause of liver disease in cats.”

The mechanism, in the sources’ own words. Veterinary Partner, in an article by Wendy Brooks, DVM, DABVP, revised in October 2025, traces it back to what a cat is: “Cats evolved as predators of small birds and rodents, eating multiple small meals throughout the day.” On what happens when that stops, the same article states: “Complicating matters is the high dietary protein requirement unique to cats; protein malnutrition develops very fast when cats do not eat.”

PetMD’s article by Mindy A. Cohan, VMD, makes the only direct species comparison we found in any of these sources, and note what it is a comparison of: “Because cats are obligate carnivores, protein intake is extremely important compared to omnivores such as humans and dogs. Prolonged depletion of protein consumption exacerbates hepatic lipidosis.” That is a statement about a protein requirement, not about speed of collapse. Cornell’s feeding page says the same thing from the other direction: “Cats are obligate carnivores, which means that they rely on nutrients found only in animal products.”

What that difference is not. It is not a published claim that a cat runs out of time faster than a dog. We looked for a source that puts the two species on one clock and did not find one. The figures that exist for each species come from different articles by different publishers measuring different things, and lining them up side by side to produce a ratio would be arithmetic on incomparable quantities. So this page does not publish a cat-versus-dog day count, and if you want the dog side of the question it lives on its own page: how long a dog can go without water or food. What is defensible, and what this page rests on, is narrower and still substantial: cats get a species-specific liver disease that most animals do not, they have a protein requirement that a period of not eating hits harder, and the consumer guidance for a cat that stops eating starts the clock at hours rather than days.

One line worth reading twice

Merck’s professional chapter carries a prognosis sentence that explains why veterinarians treat this with the urgency they do: “Hepatic lipidosis either resolves within 14–21 days or the patient dies; chronic survival does not occur.” Carry the scope with it. That sentence is about a cat that has been diagnosed with hepatic lipidosis and is being treated, in a reference written for clinicians. It is not a statement about a cat that skipped supper. Merck’s cat-owner version supplies the other half of the picture: “The outlook is good if the diagnosis is made early, treatment is started promptly, and the underlying disease, if any, can be treated.”

Both halves argue for the same thing, which is arriving early.

Whose Cat These Numbers Actually Describe

This is the scoping section, and skipping it is how a page like this ends up frightening the wrong people and reassuring the wrong people.

Almost every duration figure in this literature comes from cats who presented at a clinic with hepatic lipidosis. That is a specific population.

  • Most of them were already sick with something else. The peer-reviewed review states: “It is estimated that 50–95% of cats presenting with HL will have a relevant and significant concurrent condition”. Veterinary Partner puts it in a sentence for owners: “It is important to keep in mind that even though lipidosis usually carries a fair prognosis, in more than 90% of cases, there is a second condition that requires attention, one with a prognosis that might not be so fair.”
  • Most of them were overweight first. The review states: “Most cats with HL are overweight prior to the weight loss seen in many of these cases.” Clinician’s Brief describes affected cats as “obese or overweight, middle-aged (median age, 7 years), and/or domestic shorthair breed”. Veterinary Partner’s composite is “The average cat with lipidosis is middle-aged, was at one time obese but has lost at least 25% of its original body weight”.
  • Weight loss, not the calendar, is what the descriptions turn on. The review’s duration sentence carries a weight condition attached: “several days to several weeks, with a decrease in weight of 25% or more.” Merck’s cat-owner version lists “dramatic weight loss (more than 25% of body weight)” among the signs.

Now the part that cuts both ways, because this is the moment a reader with a lean young cat starts to relax and a reader with a heavy older cat starts to panic, and neither reaction is what the sources support.

The scoping does not mean a healthy cat is safe to fast. Cornell’s 24-hour statement is not scoped to sick or obese cats at all; it is written about “a mature cat’s health” generally. And the review reports an experiment that cuts directly against the intuition that fat cats are simply the fragile ones: “When obese cats were forced to lose weight by a 50% reduction in caloric intake, the weight loss occurred without the development of HL.” Restricted feeding of an obese cat did not produce the disease. What did was stopping: “When otherwise healthy but obese laboratory cats had their diets switched and stopped eating, they lost 30–40% of their body weight over 6–7 weeks and developed HL.”

There is one more wrinkle worth naming, and it is uncomfortable. Cornell reports that “it has been shown that the owners of obese cats often do not recognize their cat as being obese.” Which means a reader deciding whether the high-risk description applies to their own animal may be working from a judgment the research says people commonly get wrong. That is a reason to take the early threshold seriously rather than to reason about which category your cat is in.

The Evacuation Connection No Source We Read Makes

Here is the part of this subject that belongs on an emergency preparedness site rather than a veterinary one, and it took reading four sources’ trigger lists side by side to see it.

Merck’s professional chapter, listing what causes inappetence in these cats: “In fewer cases, inappetence is due to environmental stresses (eg, forced weight loss with unacceptable food substitutions, moving to a new household, newly introduced pets, loss of pets or family members, boarding, accidental confinement [eg, locked in a garage, basement, or attic], or an inside-only cat being lost outside).”

Merck’s cat-owner version, for the same thing in plainer language: “Factors that may trigger loss of appetite include a change of diet (to initiate weight loss or to a food that the cat does not like) or other stressful events (such as moving, boarding, introduction of a new pet, getting lost, or death of other pets or owners).”

Cornell, on where food avoidance shows up: “Food avoidance also occurs with relative frequency among cats that are placed in boarding kennels.” Cornell also quotes Carolyn McDaniel, VMD, on a cause people would not guess: “We’ve even seen cats who have lost their appetites after suffering the loss of a feline companion,” she says there.

Veterinary Partner, on the scenario itself: “should the cat get sick and stop eating or get accidentally lost or confined where food is unavailable, a significant problem erupts.”

Veterinary Partner again, reporting a Cornell review of 157 cats with lipidosis and what the underlying problem turned out to be, where one line stands out from the medical ones: “5% had social problems (new cat, new home, threatening other pet or person at home)”.

Now read those lists as an emergency planner rather than as a clinician. Moving to a new household. Boarding. Accidental confinement. An inside-only cat lost outside. A food substitution the cat does not like. New animals in the same space. The loss of another pet or a person. A new home.

That is a description of an evacuation. Every single item.

This join is this site’s own reasoning, and no source we read makes it. None of those documents mentions a disaster, a wildfire, a hurricane or an evacuation. They are describing ordinary life events that happen to cats one at a time. What a displacement does is deliver several of them simultaneously, to the same animal, on the same afternoon, and usually alongside a change of food and a strange room. We are not going to dress that up as a published finding, and we are not going to attach a risk multiplier to it, because no source we read publishes one. What we will say is that the conditions the veterinary literature names as triggers for a cat to stop eating are, almost item for item, the conditions an evacuation creates, and that is the reason a cat not eating in a shelter or a motel deserves the early threshold rather than a wait.

The peer-reviewed review adds the detail that makes this hard to catch: the cause “may be a subtle but, for the cat, stressful event that is only revealed by thorough questioning of the owner.” Clinician’s Brief says it more bluntly: “Although a simple household stressor may lead to appetite loss, anorexia can result from heart disease, kidney disease, chronic feline lower urinary tract disease, upper respiratory disease, cancer, and pancreatitis.” Which is the other reason not to file a cat that has stopped eating under the heading of an obviously stressed cat. Stress is on the list. So is everything else on the list. Only a veterinarian can tell you which one you have, and Cornell states the general case for owners in a single sentence: “In any case, the condition is never the result of a cat’s simply deciding not to eat.”

When to Call, and Why the Threshold Is Where It Is

The thresholds are the most practically useful thing on this page. Here is every one we found, with who publishes it.

  • Cornell Feline Health Center, on a mature cat: “Whatever its cause, anorexia can have a severe impact on a mature cat’s health if it persists for as little as 24 hours.” Cornell’s own routing on top of that is not a threshold at all but an instruction: it reports that Dr. McDaniel “strongly encourages owners to consult a veterinarian immediately upon noticing any signs of feline anorexia and to follow all advice on providing nourishment to their animals while the search for the cause of the condition goes on.”
  • Cornell Feline Health Center, on a very young kitten: “For a kitten younger than six weeks of age, food avoidance for just 12 hours can pose a lethal threat.”
  • PetMD (Mindy A. Cohan, VMD): “If your cat, for no apparent reason, fails to eat for 24-36 hours, even in the face of normal water consumption, an examination by a veterinarian is recommended.” The sentence directly after that one in the same article does not stop at the exam. It warns that significant and even life-threatening problems can occur “if a cat is completely anorectic for a few days, or partially anorectic for a few weeks.” We quote from the middle of that sentence because PetMD’s page renders the two words before it with a stray space inside the hyphenation, and we would rather quote short than tidy a source.
  • University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, quoting Dr. David Williams: “If a cat stops eating, seek veterinary attention promptly.” The same column states, in the column’s own voice rather than in a quotation from Dr. Williams, “The most important thing to watch for is not eating for multiple days.”
  • Veterinary Partner (Wendy Brooks, DVM, DABVP), on the signal that precedes the crisis: “Unexplained weight loss is never good. Have your cat evaluated before they become overtly sick.”
  • AVMA, on the water side: “Refusal to drink for 24 hours or more” is item 12 of its 13 animal emergencies requiring immediate veterinary consultation or care.

Two things are worth noticing about that list.

The thresholds cluster at 24 hours. Cornell’s is about health impact, PetMD’s is about when to book an exam, AVMA’s is about drinking rather than eating. Three different publishers, three different questions, and the figures land in the same place. None of the three says how it arrived at its number, so we are not claiming they were set independently of each other. What we are pointing at is where they landed, which is a good deal more useful than a survival figure would be.

If you are dealing with a cat that has gone to ground after a move rather than one that is short of supplies, that page is the better starting point, and a male cat straining unproductively in particular is one it treats as an emergency call at any hour.

The gap in AVMA’s list, and what it does and does not mean

AVMA’s list of 13 includes refusal to drink for a full day. It does not include a matching entry for refusal to eat, for any species. We read all 13 items on August 15, 2026 to check.

The reading of that gap is ours, not AVMA’s, and it is not that a cat skipping meals is fine, which would contradict every other source on this page. It is that a list of immediate emergencies is a different kind of document from guidance about a condition that develops over days, and the water side is the faster and more predictable of the two failures. AVMA’s own closing line covers the rest: “The bottom line is that ANY concern about your pet’s health warrants, at minimum, a call to your veterinarian.”

How many missed meals a day actually is

One more framing that makes the 24-hour figure less abstract, and this arithmetic is ours rather than Cornell’s, although both halves of it are Cornell’s.

Cornell states that until they are six months old, kittens “will usually do best when fed three meals a day.” Between six months and a year, it states, “twice daily feeding is generally best”. And of adults: “Once the cat becomes an adult, at about one year of age, feeding once or twice a day is appropriate in most cases.”

Set that next to the 24-hour threshold and it means, for a typical adult cat, that the published line arrives after one or two missed meals. Not a long fast. One skipped supper and one skipped breakfast. If the cat free-feeds from a bowl that is always down, the count is harder to make and the change is easier to miss, which is its own argument for putting a measured amount down during a displacement so you can tell tomorrow whether any of it went.

The Water Half, Where the Evidence Is Thinner

Everything above is food. Water is the other half of the question people type, and the honest report is that we found much less cat-specific material on it.

What we did find, and it is not nothing.

Merck’s professional nutrition chapter, by Sherry Lynn Sanderson, DVM, PhD, DACVIM-SAIM, DACVIM-Nutrition, opens its water section with a sentence that puts the priority in order: “Water is the most important nutrient; a lack of water can lead to death in a matter of days.” Read what that sentence does and does not say. It is written about small animals generally, not cats specifically, and it attaches no specific number of days. It is a statement of priority, not a countdown.

The same chapter carries a line that matters for anyone thinking about rationing: “When provided ample amounts of water, healthy animals can effectively self-regulate their intake, and in general, water intake should not be restricted.” It also names something that changes how you should think about a cat’s bowl in particular: “Clean, fresh water should be available at all times. Multiple water sources encourage consumption. This is particularly important in cats, which often do not drink a lot of water.”

Cornell says the same thing twice in different words. On its feeding page: “Cats should have access to clean, fresh water at all times.” On its feeding-frequency page: “While all cats should be provided with plenty of fresh water at all times, this is especially important for cats that eat only dry food, especially if they are prone to lower urinary tract disease.”

We did not locate a cat-specific water deprivation window, or a cat-specific home dehydration checklist for owners, from a primary veterinary authority, in the sources named at the bottom of this page, searched on August 15, 2026. That is a description of what those searches returned rather than a finding that no such document exists. Given how confidently the general web answers this question, that distinction is the whole point.

What covers a cat anyway. AVMA’s refusal-to-drink entry is the clearest published line we found that applies here, and it applies because AVMA wrote the list about “your pet” rather than about one species. A cat that has refused water for a day has reached a published emergency threshold. That is the answer to the water half of the title question, and it is a threshold rather than a duration on purpose.

Food and water are the same problem in a cat, more than people expect

Three separate sources tie the two halves together, and in an emergency the tie matters.

The peer-reviewed review notes that “Cats with HL frequently present as jaundiced and dehydrated”. Merck’s cat-owner version, on treatment, states that “Fluid treatment is used to correct dehydration.” And PetMD’s article puts the sequencing in a way that is directly useful to somebody in a motel room with a cat under the bed: “While hepatic lipidosis can take several weeks to develop, the more immediate concerns for cats that are not taking in adequate nutrition and water are a weakened immune system and dehydration.”

That last sentence is the practical correction to a page like this one drifting into liver disease. The liver problem is the reason a cat is different from other animals here. The dehydration is the thing more likely to be happening to your cat this afternoon.

Two more from the same article that belong in any emergency household. On the false reassurance of a cat that drinks: “Some conditions, such as diabetes mellitus, drive the urge to drink and may provide a false sense of security for pet parents.” And on the cat that is drinking but losing fluid faster: “Even if the cat is drinking plenty of water, if there is vomiting or diarrhea the cat will not be able to maintain adequate hydration, which can rapidly become an emergency needing supportive care at a veterinary hospital.” That mirrors AVMA’s own list, which treats “Severe vomiting or diarrhea” as its own emergency entry when it runs past two episodes in a day or arrives with obvious illness.

The go-bag swap that quietly removes a water source

This is a synthesis join, and we are flagging it as ours because none of the sources involved is writing about emergencies at all.

Here is what is published. Cornell’s feeding page states that “Canned cat food has a moisture content of at least 75 percent, making it a good dietary source of water.” Of semi-moist food it says that it “contains approximately 35 percent moisture”. Of dry it says: “Dry food contains between six and 10 percent water.” On its other page Cornell gives the wet-food figure slightly differently, as “about 70 to 80 percent water,” which is a useful reminder that even one publisher’s two pages are not identical and that none of these is a precise constant. Merck’s professional nutrition chapter publishes its own version: “The moisture content of canned pet foods varies from 60% to > 87%. Dry pet foods contain 3%–11% water, and semimoist foods contain 25%–35% water.” And then the consequence, in Merck’s own words: “As a result, dogs and cats consuming predominantly canned food generally drink less water than those consuming predominantly dry diets.”

Here is the part that is ours. If your cat lives on wet food, a meaningful share of its daily water arrives inside the food, and Merck states that such an animal generally drinks less from the bowl. A go-bag stocked with dry food, which is the sensible packing choice on weight and shelf life, therefore does two things at once on the day you use it: it changes the food, which is itself a named trigger for a cat to stop eating, and it moves that cat’s entire water intake into a bowl it may not be used to drinking much from, in a room it does not know.

We are not going to convert that into a volume. No source we read publishes an offset you can subtract, and Merck’s own general fluid-requirement figure in that chapter is given for most mammalian species rather than for cats, alongside the caveat that “The quantity of water required depends on a number of different factors, including the animal’s diet, environment, activity level, and health status.” How many days of food and water to carry per cat belongs to our cat go-bag page, which carries the published day counts and states plainly that the authorities it cites publish no per-pound daily figure, and to our emergency food and water storage page for the household scaling. This page does not publish a daily volume either.

What this page can give you is the behavioural instruction that falls out of the moisture figures, and it costs nothing: pack the food your cat already eats, in the form it already eats, and if that is wet food, put some of it in the bag even though dry would be lighter.

What This Page Will Not Do, and Why

Two boundaries, both deliberate, both worth explaining rather than just observing.

No home dehydration test

The obvious thing to do here would be to publish a skin tent test and a gum check for cats, the way such tests get published for dogs. We are not going to, and the reason is what the cat-specific sources actually say.

Almost all of the dehydration signs we found published for cats appear inside clinical guidance for veterinarians examining a patient, and the one owner-facing exception, which closes this section, is not a test either. Clinician’s Brief lists, among common examination findings in these cats, “signs of dehydration (eg, skin tenting, dry mucous membranes, sunken eyes, dull corneas)”. The peer-reviewed review goes further and publishes a staging table pairing percentage dehydration with clinical signs, running from “History of decreased or absent fluid intake (water, canned food)” at under 5 percent through to shock above 10 percent.

And the 5-to-8-percent row of that table contains the sentence that settles it. It reads: “Decreased skin turgor (normal in geriatric cats), dry mucous membranes”.

Normal in geriatric cats. The single finding an owner is most likely to test at home, on the population most likely to be affected, is described in the peer-reviewed source as a normal finding. That table is a tool for a clinician who is also looking at bloodwork and a physical exam, not a checklist for a car park. Porting the dog version of these tests across to cats would be an unsourced species transfer, and publishing this table as a home test would be worse, because it comes with a number attached and numbers are what people act on.

PetMD does name one sign in owner-facing language, and we will pass it on with its context rather than as a test: “With both weight loss and dehydration, the cat’s eyes will develop a sunken appearance.” The same article’s instruction after that is not to grade it. It is: “The observation of any of these problems warrants an immediate veterinary visit.”

No treatment, and no tricks to get the cat to eat

Every source cited on this page contains material this page does not carry. Cornell’s anorexia page describes force-feeding technique in step-by-step detail, and then quotes Dr. McDaniel saying “We’ve gotten away from the idea of forcing food into a cat’s mouth. That can make a cat’s aversion to food even worse.” It also names an appetite-stimulant drug. Veterinary Partner and Clinician’s Brief carry feeding-tube selection, refeeding management and drug dose tables. Merck carries fluid, supplement and vitamin protocols. PetMD closes with a list of ways to tempt a cat to eat.

None of that is on this page, on purpose. This site has no credentialed veterinary reviewer, home management of a cat that has stopped eating is a veterinary matter, and the Illinois column contains the sentence that explains why the tempting-tricks route is a trap in the first place, from Dr. Williams: “Once the cat gets hepatic lipidosis, the cat will not usually start eating again on its own.”

If a cat has stopped eating, the useful action is not a better flavour. It is a phone call.

There is one hopeful note that belongs here, from the same Illinois column, and it is worth carrying: “Fortunately, hepatic lipidosis does not occur as frequently as it once did.” Dr. Williams attributes that to “earlier intervention to tube feed anorexic cats, specifically to head off lipidosis.” Earlier intervention is the whole theme of this page, seen from the clinic’s side.

The Displacement Cases This Actually Shows Up In

Five situations where the material above stops being background and becomes the thing you are dealing with.

The cat that has gone to ground

The most common one. You reach a motel, a relative’s house or a shelter, the cat goes behind or under something, and it does not come out while you are awake. Food and water are down, and you have no idea whether either has been touched.

What the sources give you is the trigger list above, which contains almost everything about that situation, and the 24-hour threshold. What they do not give you is a way to tell from the doorway. The one thing to add from here is that a cat hiding and a cat not eating are two separate observations, and only the second one is on every threshold list on this page.

The multi-cat household with one bowl

Cornell’s line about ordinary households applies with more force in a strange room: “In a multi-cat household, not all cats automatically come when called for dinner, potentially making it difficult for some to get food unless it is left out all the time.”

Cornell’s own remedy for the ordinary version of that problem is the one worth carrying into a strange room: “In some cases, feeding cats separately or in different parts of the house may be helpful.” What is ours rather than Cornell’s is what that buys you in a displacement: a shared bowl in an unfamiliar place tells you that food went, not who ate it, and the cat most likely to be missing meals is the one that will not come out while the others are eating. Feeding separately where the space allows it also gives you a real answer tomorrow instead of a guess. The long carrier day

A cat that will not eat in a carrier during a drive is a different problem from a cat that will not eat over days in a shelter, and it is mostly a heat and airflow problem rather than a nutrition one. Our carrier page owns that question, including the point that a stressed cat often will not drink while a vehicle is moving, which is why water gets offered again at every stop.

The link back to this page is the day after. A travel day where the cat ate nothing and drank little is day one of the clock the thresholds above are about, not a separate event that resets when you arrive.

The outage where the machine kept working and the cat did not eat

An automatic feeder with a dead battery produces a missed meal, and our feeder and fountain page covers the hardware side of that. What this page adds is why the missed meal matters more in a cat than the equipment failure suggests: the same outage that stopped the feeder is usually also a strange, dark, noisy house, which is itself on the trigger lists above, and a fountain that has stopped circulating is a water source a cat may simply not use.

The senior cat, and the cat with a condition

If your cat is elderly or has a diagnosed condition, this page is not the right level of resolution. The sources above repeatedly note that a concurrent disease is the norm rather than the exception in these cases, and the thresholds are general-population figures. Your Cat Food and Water Emergency Checklist

  • Treat a cat that has not eaten for a day as a veterinary call, not a wait. Cornell puts the health impact at as little as 24 hours for a mature cat, PetMD puts the recommended exam at 24 to 36 hours, and AVMA lists refusal to drink for 24 hours or more among 13 emergencies needing immediate veterinary consultation or care.
  • For a kitten under six weeks old, use Cornell’s figure instead: food avoidance for just 12 hours can pose a lethal threat. Do not interpolate that to older kittens, since we found no published figure for the ages in between.
  • Do not run a countdown. No source we opened publishes a survival window for a cat, and the seven figures laid out on this page measure different things and disagree by more than an order of magnitude.
  • Distrust any hour-by-hour timeline you find with a veterinary school or a manual’s name on it. Two of the most-circulated figures on this topic are misattributions, and one of them is about mink.
  • Pack the food your cat already eats, in the form it already eats. A change of diet is on Merck’s own list of triggers for a cat to stop eating, and a swap from wet food to dry also moves the cat’s water intake into the bowl.
  • Put a measured amount down rather than free-feeding during a displacement, so that tomorrow you know whether anything went.
  • In a multi-cat household, feed separately if the space allows it. A shared bowl cannot tell you which cat has stopped eating.
  • Offer water constantly and never ration it. Merck’s nutrition chapter states that water intake should not, in general, be restricted, and that cats often do not drink much to begin with.
  • Do not grade dehydration at home. Almost all of the cat-specific sign lists we found are clinical exam guidance, and the peer-reviewed staging table describes decreased skin turgor as normal in geriatric cats. The one owner-facing exception, PetMD’s mention of sunken eyes, comes with an instruction to see a veterinarian immediately rather than with a way to grade it.
  • Do not try to treat this. No force-feeding, no syringe feeding, no appetite stimulants, no warming the food as a substitute for the call. Every source on this page carries treatment material this page deliberately leaves out.
  • Treat vomiting or diarrhea alongside not eating as an escalation rather than a detail. AVMA lists severe vomiting or diarrhea as its own emergency entry, and PetMD notes a cat can be drinking well and still not keep up with those losses.
  • Write down the number for an emergency veterinary practice where you would evacuate to, not only your own clinic. A 24-hour threshold is only useful if you know who to call at hour 24 in a town you do not live in.
  • Get the day counts for food and water per cat from the go-bag and storage pages rather than from this one, and rotate what is in the bag so it has not expired.

The Version You Do on a Quiet Afternoon

Three things done now make everything above easier, and none of them takes long.

Know what normal looks like for your cat. Cornell’s thresholds only work if you can tell that something changed, and PetMD’s warning is that “Because cats have an innate ability to hide illness, an underlying disease might be quite advanced by the time a pet parent notices a problem.” If your cat free-feeds, you probably do not know how much it eats in a day. Measuring it for a week, once, gives you a baseline you can compare against in a motel room.

Put its own food in the bag. This is the single item on this page that costs nothing and directly addresses a named trigger. Merck lists a change of diet, including “to a food that the cat does not like”, among the factors that may trigger loss of appetite. An emergency is the worst possible moment to find out your cat will not eat the emergency food.

Find the emergency clinic where you would actually be. Every threshold above resolves to a phone call, and the hardest version of that call is the one made from somewhere unfamiliar at ten at night. Look up the emergency and urgent-care veterinary practices near the place you would evacuate to, and write the numbers on the same card as your own veterinarian’s.

Be careful with what a general web search returns on this question, because we ran one and it produced an hour-by-hour water timeline attributed to Cornell that we could not find on Cornell's own pages. What is published and does cover a cat is a threshold rather than a countdown. AVMA's list of 13 animal emergencies that require immediate veterinary consultation or care includes "Refusal to drink for 24 hours or more", and that list is written about "your pet" generally rather than about dogs specifically. Merck's professional nutrition chapter states that "Water is the most important nutrient; a lack of water can lead to death in a matter of days." without attaching a species or a number of days, and states that "in general, water intake should not be restricted." So the honest answer is that a cat refusing water for a day is already at a published emergency threshold, and rationing an animal's drinking water is not a plan any source we read supports.

My cat has not eaten since we evacuated yesterday. Should I call a vet?

Yes. Every source we read that publishes a threshold puts it at or before that point, and none of them makes an exception for a cat that has just moved. Cornell University's Feline Health Center states that "anorexia can have a severe impact on a mature cat’s health if it persists for as little as 24 hours" and reports that its lecturer in clinical sciences, Carolyn McDaniel, VMD, "strongly encourages owners to consult a veterinarian immediately upon noticing any signs of feline anorexia", a sentence that goes on to tell owners to follow their veterinarian's advice on nourishing the animal while the cause is investigated. PetMD puts the recommended exam at 24 to 36 hours. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine quotes Dr. David Williams, a diplomate of the European and US colleges of veterinary internal medicine, saying "If a cat stops eating, seek veterinary attention promptly." It is worth knowing that a move is one of the named triggers rather than a reason to wait: Merck's cat-owner manual lists "moving, boarding, introduction of a new pet, getting lost, or death of other pets or owners" among the stressful events associated with loss of appetite in cats. If you are somewhere unfamiliar, an urgent-care or emergency veterinary practice near where you are sheltering is the call, and take any records and medication with you.

Is it true that a cat's liver starts failing after two or three days without food?

That specific claim is not something we could source, and two versions of it circulating online are misattributions we checked directly. The most authoritative-sounding version credits a 2-to-7-day threshold to the Merck Veterinary Manual. We downloaded Merck's professional Feline Hepatic Lipidosis chapter on August 15, 2026 and text-searched the entire body: the word anorexia appears once, in the sentence "A primary disease process causing anorexia or food deprivation sets the stage for HL in overconditioned cats." No duration is attached to it, there or anywhere else in the chapter. The 2-to-7-day figure is Clinician's Brief's, in a peer-reviewed article by Garret E. Pachtinger, VMD, DACVECC, and it reads "in association with anorexia (of 2-7 days’ duration) and a catabolic state (ie, a state of negative energy balance)." That describes what a clinical population had in its history rather than how long a healthy cat lasts. A second version cites a 5-to-7-day critical fasting window to a paper titled "Gene expressions of de novo hepatic lipogenesis in feline hepatic lipidosis". We read that paper: the passage states that "5–7 days of fasting appeared to be the critical time period for this to develop" in the American mink, used there as a model animal. It is not a figure about cats. What is genuinely published is that hepatic lipidosis is real, it is specific to cats among most species, and the veterinary advice is to get a cat that has stopped eating examined rather than to count days.

How long can a kitten go without food?

Much less time than an adult cat, and the one published figure we found is Cornell University's Feline Health Center, which states that "For a kitten younger than six weeks of age, food avoidance for just 12 hours can pose a lethal threat." Read the age qualifier as part of the figure: it is written about kittens younger than six weeks, not about any young cat. Cornell separately states that until they are six months old, kittens "will usually do best when fed three meals a day." so a 12-hour gap in a kitten that young represents several missed feedings rather than one. We did not find a comparable published figure for kittens between six weeks and a year, so we are not going to interpolate one. If you are evacuating with an unweaned or very young litter, the practical answer is that it is a veterinary call rather than a wait, and it should be an early one. Nothing on this page is a feeding protocol or a treatment instruction, and orphan neonates in particular need the direction of the veterinarian or rescue supervising them.

My cat is drinking plenty of water but not eating. Is that reassuring?

Less than it feels, and two sources say so for two different reasons. On the food side, PetMD's article by Mindy A. Cohan, VMD, sets its recommended exam threshold at a cat that "fails to eat for 24-36 hours, even in the face of normal water consumption, an examination by a veterinarian is recommended." Normal drinking is written into that threshold rather than being an exception to it. On the water side, the same article warns that "Some conditions, such as diabetes mellitus, drive the urge to drink and may provide a false sense of security for pet parents." and that "Even if the cat is drinking plenty of water, if there is vomiting or diarrhea the cat will not be able to maintain adequate hydration, which can rapidly become an emergency needing supportive care at a veterinary hospital." The same article notes that "Because cats have an innate ability to hide illness, an underlying disease might be quite advanced by the time a pet parent notices a problem." So a cat drinking well and eating nothing is still a cat that has stopped eating, and that is the thing the published thresholds are about. Call your veterinarian rather than watching another day.

Should I use the skin tent or gum test on my cat like the ones published for dogs?

This page does not publish a home dehydration test for cats, and the reason is in the sources rather than in caution for its own sake. That is written about ordinary household feeding rather than about an emergency.
