Pet Water After a Flooded Private Well: What the Animals Drink While the Well Is Out of Service

Some pet emergencies outrun any checklist. Follow whichever document your own state health department or well contractor hands you, and plan the animals' water around the longest figure you are holding rather than the shortest.

New Mexico State University Extension Guide M-115, page dated October 2025, states: "Special precautions are needed on automatic water systems for animals and irrigation. Provide alternate water sources for pets or livestock who depend on automatic waterers, then make sure the chlorine reaches those outlets." The same guide states that during disinfection, "water from the system is not suitable for consumption or extended contact by people or animals." That guide is written for shock chlorination generally rather than for the flooded-well case specifically.
- Agencies disagree about whether the household may use the water after the flush or must wait for a laboratory. EPA's disinfection fact sheet places use before the test: its Step 8 reads "The system should now be disinfected, and you can now use the water." Step 9 reads "Have your water tested for bacteria 7 to 10 days after disinfection." Read Step 8 with the scope the same fact sheet prints above its procedure: "The suggestions below are intended to supplement flood precautions issued by State and local health authorities." Step 8 is therefore the eighth step of a supplement to state and local precautions rather than a standalone federal clearance. EPA's own Frequent Questions About Flooded Homes page, last updated April 2, 2026, states the opposite order: "Do not drink or wash with water from the flooded well until it is tested and safe to use." University of Georgia Extension, North Carolina DHHS, New York State DOH and Minnesota DOH all hold the wait-for-the-lab line. Where issuers differ, this site's own position is to hold the animals on an alternate supply until a laboratory result comes back, because that is the more protective of the two published answers and the cost of being wrong falls on an animal that cannot tell you it feels ill.
- Chlorinated flush water is a hazard to some of the animals this page is about, and two Pennsylvania issuers are the ones that say so. Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection, in the same step that tells you where to send the flush water, states: "Fish and aquatic animals are very sensitive to very low levels of chlorine and can be killed." Penn State Extension warns that high chlorine water reaching a stream, pond or wetland may cause environmental damage, "especially a fish kill." Six further documents on this page tell you to keep flush water away from something, but each names its own list rather than a shared one: EPA names plants, lakes, streams and septic tanks; Maine names septic systems, lakes, rivers, ponds, any surface waters, lawns, gardens and sensitive plants; Minnesota names septic systems, lawns and gardens; New York State names grass and shrubbery; New Mexico State names landscaping plants and lawn areas; University of Georgia names the septic tank. None of those six mentions a dog or a cat finding the resulting puddle. Keep animals off the discharge area while you flush and until it has drained and dried.
- The clock is measured in weeks, not in an afternoon, and that is what your water plan has to cover. EPA publishes a test 7 to 10 days after disinfection. New Mexico State Extension publishes sampling "Approximately 2 weeks after flushing the system" and a repeat test "in 2 to 3 months". Penn State Extension publishes a retest "approximately 10 to 14 days later" and then again after two to three months. Pennsylvania DEP publishes an extra "two to five days" wait before resampling. Minnesota DOH publishes a second test two weeks after a clean result. Those are prescribed waits published by the agencies themselves, not an estimate of how backed up a laboratory is.
- Disinfecting the well does not fix everything that a flood can put in it, and EPA says so on the same page as the procedure: "Well disinfection will not provide protection from pesticides, heavy metals and other types of non-biological contamination. If such contamination is suspected, due to the nearness of these contaminant sources, special treatment is required." EPA also cautions that because of the extent of a flood and the speed and direction of groundwater flow, a well "may not be a safe source of water for many months after the flood." If you suspect fuel oil or a chemical release rather than bacteria, New York State's Department of Health tells well owners not to use the well at all and to contact their local health department or the state spill hotline.
Nobody sends you a boil water notice for your own well. There is no robocall, no strip along the top of a utility website, no two-minute figure printed on anything. The water came up, the water went down, the pump still hums, and the tap in the kitchen still runs clear. Somewhere in the house there are bowls, a circulating fountain with a reservoir, a gravity waterer that holds four days on purpose, and possibly a tank with a heater in it. Every one of them is plumbed, directly or by way of a jug you fill at the sink, to a hole in the ground that a flood just went through.
This page is about the part of that problem nobody writes down: what the animals drink between the flood and the laboratory result, and how long that gap actually is.
It is a narrow scope on purpose. This is not the flood itself, and it is not the animal that waded through the water in the yard. This page starts the morning after, when the water is off your floor and the well is still yours to deal with.
The short version is that ten different bodies publish a well disinfection procedure. Six of them wrote for the flooded well specifically (EPA, New York State DOH, North Carolina DHHS, Minnesota DOH, University of Georgia Extension and the National Ground Water Association) and four wrote for shock chlorination generally (Pennsylvania DEP, Maine CDC, New Mexico State University Extension and Penn State Extension), which is worth knowing because the shortest contact interval on this page comes from one of the general documents. They broadly agree that a flooded well is out of service until it has at least been evaluated and disinfected, and they do not agree on two things that decide what you pour into a bowl: how long the chlorine has to sit, and whether the household may use the water after the flush or has to wait for a laboratory. Those two disagreements are the page. They are not a defect in the guidance. They are the reason a household with animals needs a plan that survives whichever document lands in front of it.
First, Before Anything: The Pump Is an Electrical Problem
Two of these documents open with the same warning, in the same place, before any water instruction at all, and it is worth putting first here for the same reason.
EPA’s flooded-well fact sheet, EPA 816-F-05-021, whose footer reads AUGUST 2005 and, on the line below, (UPDATED OCTOBER 2024), carries a boxed warning at the top of page one: “DO NOT TURN ON THE PUMP”, and beneath it, “There is danger of electrical shock and damage to your well or pump if they have been flooded”. Its closing section repeats the point in a way people underestimate: “Remember that there is a danger of electrical shock from any electrical device that has been flooded; consult a certified electrician. Rubber boots and gloves are not adequate protection from electric shock.”
EPA’s private wells page, last updated February 26, 2026, opens its five water well flood response steps with the same instruction: “Stay away from the well pump while flooded to avoid electric shock.” The National Ground Water Association’s flooded-well handout says it too, as a bullet with no closing full stop of its own: “Stay away from the well pump while it’s flooded to avoid electrical shock”.
New York State’s Department of Health adds the detail that decides whether you can even inspect it: “Most private wells have the pump located inside the well casing and submerged, so well owners will probably not be able to inspect the pump. Well owners should contact a qualified professional, registered well driller or pump contractor, to evaluate and service well pumps.” And on the control box, which is the part that is not submerged by design: “If the pump’s control box was submerged during the flood, its electrical components should be cleaned and dry before electrical service is restored. Do not attempt to clean electrical components without being 100% sure electricity is shut off.”
The pet-specific edge of this is small but real. A household that has just lost its water supply for the animals is a household under pressure to get the pump running again this afternoon. That pressure is exactly what these warnings are written against. Bottled water solves the animals’ problem for a day. An energised control box does not have a second version of the story.
What Everybody Agrees On: The Well Is Out of Service
Before the disagreements, the agreement, because it is the part that governs your first twenty-four hours.
National Ground Water Association. Its flooded-well handout lists the wells most at risk, including older wells now in designated floodplains, wells whose casing is not finished above the high-water level, wells not adequately capped or sealed, and, in a bullet that tells you something about who wrote it, “Wells with an abnormal affinity for bad luck.” Then the rule: well rehabilitation, relocation and elevation may be long-term options, “but in the short term for any well that has been flooded, or is suspected of having been influenced by floodwaters, it needs to be viewed as unsafe for potable use until the well has been evaluated and tested to make sure it’s safe for use as drinking water.” Its instruction while you wait is two clauses long: “Do not drink the water or wash with it, instead, use an alternative supply such as bottled water”.
EPA. The boxed warning on the fact sheet reads “DO NOT WASH WITH WELL WATER”, and beneath it, “People drinking or washing with water from a private well that has been flooded will risk getting sick.” On the wells most likely to be affected: “Wells that are more than 10 years old or less than 50 feet deep are likely to be contaminated, even if there is no apparent damage.” Read that last clause twice. The absence of visible damage is not evidence.
North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Its flood disinfection handout, footer dated 10/2024, puts it in capitals across the top of page one: “FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY’S SAFETY, DO NOT DRINK WATER FROM YOUR PERSONAL WELL UNTIL THE WELL HAS BEEN DISINFECTED AND TESTED.”
Minnesota Department of Health, page last updated 10/18/2024: “Water from a flooded well cannot be regarded as safe for drinking or food preparation until the well and plumbing system have been flushed and disinfected, and a water test shows that it is safe.”
New York State Department of Health. Its flood recovery fact sheet opens with the sentence that matters most on a site like this one, because it is the only flood-specific well document we opened that names animals in its hazard statement: when a water supply well has been affected by flood waters, “the water within the well may be contaminated with waterborne pathogens (germs) that can cause serious illness in humans and pets.” It then structures the job: “There are five action steps needed to get a flooded well back into service safely: Assessment… Repair… Flushing… Disinfection… Sampling.”
That is the frame to hold. Five steps, not one afternoon. And the step your animals live inside is the gap between the first and the last.
The Two Disagreements, Side by Side
Here is where the published guidance stops being one voice. Every cell below is what that document’s own text states, read on August 15, 2026. Where a document does not address something, the cell says so rather than borrowing an answer from another row.

Two things fall out of that table, and both of them change what you do.
Disagreement one: the contact interval is not one number
Four hours, six hours, eight hours, twelve hours. Four different published floors across the eight documents in the table that publish one, and two of the four eight-hour documents add a preference for twelve to twenty-four. None of them is wrong. They are different issuers writing for different well populations, different bleach strengths and different regulatory contexts, and a well owner in Pennsylvania is genuinely being told something different from a well owner in Georgia.

The rule there is the rule here. Follow the document your own state health department or licensed well contractor gives you.
What is different about a well is that nobody hands you a document. You go looking for one, you find several, and the several disagree. So here is this site’s own reasoning, stated as ours and not attributed to any of the agencies above: when you are holding more than one of these documents and you have animals to water, plan the alternate supply against the longest interval you are holding, not the shortest. Buying an extra day of bottled water costs you a shelf. Guessing short costs you the only thing the interval is protecting.
Disagreement two: use the water, or wait for the laboratory
This is the one with a real consequence, and it is worth stating precisely rather than dramatically, because two federal documents from the same agency sit on opposite sides of it.
Before any of its steps, the same fact sheet scopes them twice, in the column of text printed above the procedure. It states that “Drilled, driven or bored wells are best disinfected by a well or pump contractor, because it is difficult for the private owner to thoroughly disinfect these wells.” And it states that “The suggestions below are intended to supplement flood precautions issued by State and local health authorities.” Both sentences change what Step 8 is. It is the eighth step of a supplement to state and local precautions, in a procedure EPA says a contractor is the one best placed to perform, rather than a free-standing federal permission to resume use. That narrows the gap below without erasing it, and the contractor sentence is worth its own moment on a page describing pouring a gallon of bleach into a flooded well.
EPA’s flooded-well fact sheet runs its steps in this order. Step 7 tells you to flush: “Once the waiting period is up, turn on an outside spigot with hose attached and run the water into a safe area where it will not disturb plants, lakes, streams or septic tanks. Run the water until there is no longer a chlorine odor. Turn the water off.” Then Step 8, in a single sentence: “The system should now be disinfected, and you can now use the water.” Then Step 9: “Have your water tested for bacteria 7 to 10 days after disinfection.” Use first, test after.
EPA’s Frequent Questions About Flooded Homes page, last updated April 2, 2026, answers the household-well question in two sentences and puts the test first: “Do not turn on the pump due to danger of electric shock. Do not drink or wash with water from the flooded well until it is tested and safe to use.” Its private wells page, last updated February 26, 2026, opens its flood response steps with the same bar, though without naming a testing condition: “Do not drink or wash from the flooded well to avoid becoming sick.” That step list contains no testing step at all, so it forbids drinking without saying what lifts the ban.
The state health departments and the extension services are lined up with the second version. University of Georgia Extension is the most explicit: “Even if a well has been shock chlorinated, do not drink or consume the water until you submit a water sample to a Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) certified laboratory and the laboratory analysis report states that the well water is safe to drink.” Minnesota’s instruction is a single imperative: “You must continue to boil your water until the laboratory reports that the water is safe.” New York State: “Until testing shows that the water is free of contamination, you should continue to use bottled water or disinfect water for drinking and food preparation”, a sentence that carries on to cross-reference that document’s own disinfecting-water section. North Carolina, on the same handout that offers free testing through local health departments: “Please note that after your water has been tested, you will need to wait for results from the local health department before using your well for drinking.”
We are not going to resolve that for the agencies, and we are not going to pretend one of them said something it did not. What this page can do is state its own position and label it as ours: hold the animals on the alternate supply until a laboratory result comes back. The reasoning is not complicated. The two published answers differ only in whether an interval of days is spent on the well or on bottled water, the more protective answer is the one three state health departments and a university extension service publish, and the animal cannot report a mild gastrointestinal illness or decide for itself to stop drinking. That is a judgment, not a citation.
One thing this does not change: if your local or state health department gives you an instruction, that instruction is the one that governs, because it was written for your well, your aquifer and your flood. EPA’s own closing line on the fact sheet says as much: “If in doubt about the well water supply, follow health department drinking and bathing advisories.”
The Animals in the Documents
There is a persistent assumption that nothing published about well disinfection mentions animals at all and that a pet household is entirely on its own here. That is not right, and it is worth going document by document, because what is published is narrower than you would want and more useful than you would expect.
New Mexico State University Extension, Guide M-115, page dated October 2025. This is the find. It publishes an instruction written for exactly the appliance a modern pet household runs on, inside the disinfection procedure itself:
“Shock chlorination will be most effective if the chlorine reaches every part of the water system. Special precautions are needed on automatic water systems for animals and irrigation. Provide alternate water sources for pets or livestock who depend on automatic waterers, then make sure the chlorine reaches those outlets.”
Read the order of operations in that second sentence, because it is doing two jobs at once. The animals get an alternate supply, and then you deliberately push chlorine through the automatic waterer, because an outlet the chlorine never reaches is an outlet that is still carrying whatever was in the system. A plumbed auto-refill bowl or a livestock float valve is a faucet. It has to be treated like one.
The same guide states the general bar in a sentence that names animals directly: “Shock chlorination introduces very high levels of chlorine into a water system. During the disinfection process, water from the system is not suitable for consumption or extended contact by people or animals.” Note that phrase extended contact, which is broader than drinking, and note the scope of the document: M-115 is written for shock chlorination generally, for a well contaminated when it was installed or when the pump was repaired, not for the flooded-well case specifically. Its bacteriological logic transfers cleanly. Its scope should be reported honestly.
New York State Department of Health. Names pets once, in the hazard sentence quoted above: pathogens “that can cause serious illness in humans and pets.” That is a statement about the risk, not an instruction about how to water an animal, and the difference matters. It tells you the animals are inside the hazard. It does not tell you what to pour.
Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Names animals on the disposal side, in the same step that tells you where the flush water goes: “Please avoid discharging water containing detectable amounts of chlorine into storm drains, waterways, ponds, creeks, etc. Fish and aquatic animals are very sensitive to very low levels of chlorine and can be killed.”
Penn State Extension makes the same point about springs, and its wording is the more vivid of the two: disinfection of a spring box “should not be attempted if the spring overflow (the water that does not enter the house) enters a stream, pond, or wetland area where high chlorine water may cause environmental damage, especially a fish kill.”
University of Georgia Extension publishes the strictest bar during the contact window and phrases it about people: “It is very important to allow the chlorine to stay in the well for 12 to 24 hours. DO NOT allow anyone to drink or use the water during this time and until the system has been purged.” Anyone is a person word. We are not going to quietly widen it into any animal and hand you a UGA instruction that UGA did not write, though the practical effect for a household is obvious and NMSU’s sentence covers the same ground in words that do name animals.
EPA, NGWA, Maine CDC, Minnesota DOH and North Carolina DHHS are human-scoped throughout the passages quoted on this page. That is a description of the documents we read, not a claim about what any of those agencies publishes elsewhere.
What is not published, and what this page is doing about it
Nobody publishes the join. There is a flood-specific literature that says the well is unsafe, a shock-chlorination literature that names animals and automatic waterers, and a veterinary literature that publishes water requirements, and no document we opened puts all three together and tells a household with a dog, a cat and a fish tank what to do across the several weeks a flooded well takes to come back.
So the following is stated as this site’s own reasoning, assembled from the sources above rather than quoted from any of them:
- A flooded well is out of service for every water-using animal in the house from the moment you suspect it, not from the moment you start the bleach. The hazard NGWA and EPA describe exists before the disinfection does.
- Every plumbed or refilled animal appliance is inside the system. The auto-refill bowl, the circulating fountain, the gravity waterer you top up at the kitchen sink, the misting reservoir, the tank top-off jug. NMSU names automatic waterers explicitly; the rest follow from the same logic, and we are saying so rather than implying an agency did. Note what that argument does and does not say. It is a reason to stop refilling those appliances from a well you no longer trust. It is not a reason to pour out what is already in them. Water that was drawn before the flood and sat in a closed appliance the floodwater never reached is clean water you already own, and in an event measured in weeks it can be the largest reserve in the house. Empty what the floodwater physically reached, and anything filled after you first suspected the well was influenced. Keep the rest and count it toward the alternate supply.
- The alternate supply has to be planned before the procedure starts, not found during it. Maine’s Drinking Water Program is the one document that says this in so many words, and it says it about people.
- The animals stay on that supply until a laboratory result comes back, for the reason given in the section above.
That structure, what the sources say, what they do not cover, and what we conclude from putting them together, is deliberate. It is how this site handles a gap rather than manufacturing an official-sounding rule to fill it.
What the Animals Actually Drink, and For How Long
The alternate supply, planned before you start
Maine’s Drinking Water Program states the planning step plainly, in guidance written for the household:
“It will be necessary to provide an alternate source of drinking water until the well shocking process is completed; use of the water system must be minimized since very high levels of chlorine will be present. Highly chlorinated water should not be used for drinking, bathing, or cooking.”
NGWA’s version is shorter: “use an alternative supply such as bottled water”. North Carolina DHHS puts bottled water at the top of its list of safe water alternatives, under a heading that reads “Until your well is tested and safe:”
For a pet household the practical translation is a volume problem before it is a safety problem, and the volume is the next section.
The interim boiling instruction, and the altitude wrinkle
If bottled water is not available, three health departments publish a boiling instruction for the interim, and one federal page publishes a different altitude threshold from the others. All four are quoted here rather than averaged.
North Carolina DHHS: “If you do not have safe bottled water, boil your water to make it safe to drink. If the water is cloudy, first filter it through a clean cloth, paper towel or coffee filter. Another option is to let any particles in the water settle to the bottom, then draw off the clear water for boiling.” Then: “Bring the clear water to a rolling boil for at least one minute (at elevations above 6,500 feet, boil for three minutes). Let the boiled water cool and store in sanitized containers.”
Minnesota DOH: “If you must use the well water for drinking or food preparation before the well has been disinfected and tested, the water must be brought to a full rolling boil for at least one minute. Bottled water is another option.”
New York State DOH, which flags boiling as its preferred interim method: “(NOTE: Disinfection by boiling produces the safest water)”, and then “Bring water to a rolling boil, and keep a full boil for at least one minute.”
EPA’s Frequent Questions About Flooded Homes page: “To kill all major water-borne bacterial pathogens, bring water to a rolling boil for 1 full minute. Boil 3 minutes at elevations above 5280 ft (1 mile or 1.6 km).”
That last threshold, 5,280 feet, is lower than the 6,500 feet North Carolina publishes and lower than the 6,500-foot figure that appears in the CDC boiling guidance our boil water advisory page works through. Both are published; they are different documents from different issuers, not a correction of one another. If your house sits between those two elevations, this site’s own reasoning is to use the longer time, for the same reason as the contact interval: three minutes on a stove is cheap.
Two hard limits on boiling that every one of these documents shares. It addresses germs, and it does not address chemicals. And it is an interim measure for the household, not a treatment for the well. New York State DOH is explicit about the second: even if your well is operational, “you should disinfect your water until it is tested and found suitable for drinking.”

How much, per animal, per day
This is the arithmetic that turns “a few days” into a shopping list, and it is where the veterinary literature is thinner than a pet owner expects.
The Merck Veterinary Manual’s small-animal nutrition chapter, authored by Sherry Lynn Sanderson, DVM, PhD, DACVIM-SAIM, DACVIM-Nutrition, and last updated September 2024, opens its water section with the sentence that frames the whole problem: “Water is the most important nutrient; a lack of water can lead to death in a matter of days. Clean, fresh water should be available at all times. Multiple water sources encourage consumption. This is particularly important in cats, which often do not drink a lot of water.”
On quantity it is careful, and the care is the useful part. It first states that “Several approaches have been used to estimate daily water needs. There are general guidelines for daily fluid requirements in dogs and cats, but individual variations exist. The quantity of water required depends on a number of different factors, including the animal’s diet, environment, activity level, and health status.” Then, the figure: “In a thermoneutral environment, most mammalian species need ~44–66 mL/kg body weight.”
Three things about that sentence, all of which matter if you are going to use it.
It is one range for mammals generally. It is not a dog figure and a separate cat figure, and Merck does not present it as one. It also does not extend to birds, reptiles or amphibians, which are not mammals. Rabbits are mammals and so fall inside that range on its face, but Merck publishes a separate and substantially higher rabbit figure in a different chapter, which is the subject of the note that closes this section.
The quoted sentence does not contain the words per day. The daily framing comes from the sentences before it, which is why they are quoted here too rather than folded silently into the number.
And the unit is metric per kilogram, so getting it into the units on a jug of water in an American kitchen requires a conversion. That conversion is arithmetic, not a citation, and it is this site’s own: 44 to 66 millilitres per kilogram works out to roughly 0.67 to 1.01 US fluid ounces per pound of body weight. A 60-pound dog therefore lands somewhere around 40 to 61 fluid ounces a day by that range, which is roughly a third of a gallon to just under half a gallon, before you add anything for heat, activity or a dry diet. Merck notes that last factor directly: “The moisture content of canned pet foods varies from 60% to > 87%. Dry pet foods contain 3%–11% water, and semimoist foods contain 25%–35% water. As a result, dogs and cats consuming predominantly canned food generally drink less water than those consuming predominantly dry diets.”

Note the scope limit that travels with Merck’s range wherever it is used: it is a range for mammals as a group, so it is not a species-specific per-pound formula for a cat any more than it is one for a dog.
Merck also publishes a sentence that is easy to skim past and worth holding on to during a water shortage: “When provided ample amounts of water, healthy animals can effectively self-regulate their intake, and in general, water intake should not be restricted.” Rationing an animal’s water to stretch a supply is not a plan. Buying more water is the plan.
The gap, and where it is narrower than it looks. Merck publishes a rabbit figure, in a different chapter of the same manual. Its rabbit nutrition chapter, in the section on water requirements, states: “It has been shown in metabolic studies that a rabbit will consume water at a rate of approximately 120 mL/kg/day.” The sentence Merck prints immediately after that one is the reason it belongs on this page: “This is about twice the amount usually calculated for an equally sized dog or cat.” Note what that does to the range above. A rabbit household that sizes its bottled water from the mammalian 44 to 66 mL/kg will buy roughly half of what Merck’s rabbit figure implies, in an event this page measures in weeks. Size a rabbit from the rabbit chapter, not from the range.
We did not locate an equivalent daily drinking-water volume for birds or reptiles in what we searched on August 15, 2026. That is a description of a search, not a finding that no such figure exists anywhere. For those animals, ask the exotics practice that already sees them, in advance, and write the number on the same page as the practice’s after-hours line. This site is not going to scale a mammalian range across a taxonomic gap and hand you a number for a parrot.
How many days to buy for
Not two. The prescribed waits in these documents are the honest planning basis, and they are published by the agencies rather than estimated by us:
- EPA: test for bacteria “7 to 10 days after disinfection.”
- New Mexico State University Extension: “Approximately 2 weeks after flushing the system, sample the water (according to laboratory instructions) and have it tested for biological contamination. Repeat the test in 2 to 3 months to be sure the system has not been recontaminated.” It also notes that “Some chlorine may persist in the system for 7-10 days.” The two sentences that follow qualify that one and belong with it: “Water with a slight chlorine smell should be usable for most purposes. If the odor or taste is objectionable, simply let the water run until the chlorine dissipates.” Note that this is a shock-chlorination guide rather than a flooded-well guide, and that the flood-specific documents on this page do not treat a faint chlorine smell as the signal that the water is fit for an animal.
- Penn State Extension: “After disinfection of a well, you should retest your water for total coliform bacteria approximately 10 to 14 days later. If no coliform bacteria are present, wait an additional two to three months and have the water tested again. If the bacteria return in either of these subsequent tests, a continuous disinfection treatment system will be necessary.”
- Pennsylvania DEP: “Once the water source is chlorine-free, wait an additional two to five days and then resample for bacteria.”
- Maine CDC Drinking Water Program: “After waiting at least one week for the chlorine to dissipate, collect a water sample for total coliform and E-Coli (bacteria) analysis by a state-certified laboratory, following proper sampling procedures.” It adds a practical reason the wait is not optional: “The laboratory will likely reject a sample containing even a trace of chlorine, so the use of a chlorine residual test kit is recommended to ensure that chlorine is not present before taking the sample.”
- Minnesota DOH: once a safe result arrives, “it is a good idea to have the water tested again in two weeks to assure that the disinfection has been completely effective.”
- New York State DOH: “You may wish to consider retesting the well water again after several weeks. If flooding and groundwater contamination is extensive, your well may be susceptible to recontamination for some time.”
Add the front end of the job, which is not instant either. New York State DOH on pumping the well clear before you disinfect anything: “Depending on the size and depth of the well and extent of contamination, pumping times will vary… it may take thirty minutes, or it could be several hours or days.”
There is also the question of how long a laboratory takes, which is a different question from how long the chemistry takes, and the honest answer is that it depends on where you are and what just happened. We found one specific account rather than a national figure. In North Carolina Health News on October 21, 2024, reporting on water conditions in western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene, well driller Jamison Gibson, owner of A 1st Choice Well Service and Appalachian Well Drilling, described the state turnaround while explaining what it takes to commission a newly drilled well: “At this time, it generally takes almost a month to get the water panel tested through the state,” Gibson said. He added, “Since this hurricane, I heard they were doing mobile testing here in Buncombe County, so hopefully that can expedite the water process.” The same article notes that private labs were helping work through the county’s backlog.
That is one well driller’s account of one disaster in one state, reported in a news outlet, and it should not be read as a national testing timeline. The counterweight is in the same window: on October 31, 2024, EPA’s Region 4 office announced free sampling kits available through state and local health departments and two mobile water laboratories deployed to western North Carolina, with Acting Southeast Regional Administrator Jeaneanne Gettle quoted saying “Testing your well water is the only way to know if the storm caused harmful contamination”, and “Testing is free, and it can help protect your family’s health. That is why EPA deployed two mobile water laboratories to Western North Carolina and is working with state and local partners to make testing fast and readily available.”
The planning conclusion, stated as ours: buy for the prescribed waits, which are agency-published and run one to two weeks minimum before a first test even makes sense, then add whatever your own local health department tells you its turnaround is. Call and ask that question early, on day one, not on day nine.
The Flush Water in the Yard
This is the section that exists because of one sentence in one state’s guidance, and because six other issuers write around the same hazard without ever pointing it at an animal.
Every one of these documents tells you to get the chlorinated flush water away from things. EPA: run it “into a safe area where it will not disturb plants, lakes, streams or septic tanks.” Minnesota DOH: “Avoid running the chlorinated water into a septic system or onto lawns or gardens.” Read Minnesota’s next lines with it, because they carve the rule back: after telling you to flush the remaining chlorine from the plumbing, it adds that “The small amount of chlorinated water flushed from the water pipes can be run into a septic tank.” The bar is on the bulk of the flush, not on every drop. New York State DOH: run the water using an outdoor faucet and garden hose “in an area away from grass and shrubbery until the odor of chlorine disappears.” New Mexico State Extension: “Chlorinated water flushed out of a sprinkler or drip system should be directed away from landscaping plants and lawn areas to avoid damage to the plants.” University of Georgia Extension makes the septic point in detail, warning that highly chlorinated water discharged to a septic tank “could cause problems with the beneficial bacterial colonies in the septic tank.” Maine’s Drinking Water Program publishes the longest list of things to keep it away from: “Take care not to discharge large amounts of heavily chlorinated water into a septic system, nearby lakes, rivers, ponds, or any surface waters, onto lawns, gardens, or sensitive plants.”
Plants, lawns, septic tanks, streams. Pennsylvania DEP is the one that names animals:
“Please avoid discharging water containing detectable amounts of chlorine into storm drains, waterways, ponds, creeks, etc. Fish and aquatic animals are very sensitive to very low levels of chlorine and can be killed.”
Penn State Extension carries the same warning about spring overflow reaching a stream, pond or wetland, “especially a fish kill.”
So the aquatic case is published, by two Pennsylvania sources, and it is unambiguous. If you keep a pond, a water feature with fish in it, or a tank that gets topped up from an outdoor spigot, the discharge route is the first thing to plan and not the last. What none of these documents publishes is the land-animal version. A flush runs until the chlorine odour is gone, which can mean a hose running for a long time into a corner of a yard, and the result is standing water in a place a dog is entirely capable of finding interesting. None of the six documents above mentions that. So this is this site’s own reasoning, not an instruction any agency wrote:
Keep animals out of the discharge area for the duration of the flush and until it has drained and dried, and do not let a dog work a hose end during one. The reasoning chain is short and every link in it is quoted above: the water coming out of that hose is water NMSU says is unsuitable for consumption or extended contact by people or animals, it is water PA DEP says can kill aquatic animals at very low concentrations, and the flush is deliberately run until you can no longer smell chlorine, which means it starts at the concentration nobody wants anything drinking. Confining the animals for the flush is a small inconvenience that removes the question entirely.
The same logic covers the plants-and-lawn instructions from the other direction. If you are following EPA’s or Minnesota’s instruction and picking a discharge spot away from the garden, pick one the animals do not use either.
What Disinfection Does Not Fix
Two limits, both published, both easy to lose in the relief of finishing a procedure.
Chemicals are a different problem. EPA states it on the same fact sheet as the steps: “Well disinfection will not provide protection from pesticides, heavy metals and other types of non-biological contamination. If such contamination is suspected, due to the nearness of these contaminant sources, special treatment is required.” EPA also tells well owners who see chemical containers, including barrels and drums, that have moved onto their property to call their state or county health department or the Superfund hotline.
New York State DOH separates the two problems at the top of its fact sheet. That document, it says, addresses possible pathogen contamination, and then: “Drinking water wells can also be contaminated by fuel oil or other chemical products released during the flood (such as from home oil tanks and agricultural tanks). If you believe your well may be contaminated by petroleum or other chemicals, do not use your well and immediately contact your local Health Department” or the state spill hotline.
Pennsylvania DEP scopes its own procedure just as carefully: it is “only a temporary measure for use by homeowners to treat for bacteriological contamination (not including the organisms that cause giardiasis or cryptosporidiosis) and may not be used by public water suppliers.”
For a pet household the translation is short. If you suspect fuel, heating oil, an agricultural chemical or an industrial release rather than bacteria, boiling is not an interim answer and disinfection is not a fix. That is bottled water for every animal in the house and a call to your health department, and it is a case where our boil water advisory page has the relevant background on why boiling can be the wrong move entirely when chemicals are involved.
The aquifer keeps its own schedule. EPA’s caution box is the sentence to write down:
“Because of the extensive flood area and the speed and direction of ground water flow, your well may not be a safe source of water for many months after the flood. The well can become contaminated with bacteria or other contaminants. Waste water from malfunctioning septic tanks or chemicals seeping into the ground can contaminate the ground water even after the water was tested and found to be safe. It will be necessary to take long range precautions, including repeated testing, to protect the safety of drinking water.”
That is why the follow-up tests in the previous section exist, and it is why a clean first result is a milestone rather than an all-clear.
And shock chlorination is not permanent. Penn State Extension publishes the most useful figure we found on this, and the qualifier attached to it is as important as the number:
“When done properly, shock chlorination will kill all the bacteria existing in a well. A recent Penn State study of wells contaminated by coliform bacteria found that shock chlorination and installation of a sanitary well cap successfully removed the bacteria for one year in 15 percent of the wells. This procedure was most successful in wells that had small numbers of coliform bacteria (fewer than 10 colonies per 100 mL) and no E. coli bacteria.”
New Mexico State Extension explains the mechanism from the other side: “If the groundwater itself is the source of bacteria, the system will be contaminated again when that water is pumped into the plumbing. In that case, continuous chlorination or other disinfection methods will be necessary to ensure the safety of the water supply.”
For a household with animals that is a planning fact rather than a discouragement. A well that has flooded once is a well that can flood again, the follow-up testing schedule runs for months, and the stored-water habit that got you through this event is the same habit that gets you through the next one. The Animal That Was In the Floodwater
This is a boundary rather than a full treatment, because it belongs to a different page and the two problems arrive on the same day.
Louisiana’s Department of Health publishes a pet-specific floodwater fact sheet, revised 3/16/2016 and attributed to state public health veterinarian Dr. Gary Balsamo, Dr. Renée Poirrier and Dr. Martha Littlefield. It opens with a one-line paragraph: “Pets should be prevented from entering or drinking floodwaters.” On what to do after exposure: “Always bathe your pet with a mild pet shampoo after it is exposed to floodwaters. If no shampoo is available, dish soap can be used, but care should be taken not get the shampoo or dish soap in the pet’s eyes.” That phrasing, “not get”, is the source’s own and is reproduced here as written. It continues: “Fully rinse the shampoo or dish soap out of the pet’s hair. This procedure can prevent skin infections and remove floodwater contaminants from your pet’s hair. When possible, wear protective clothing such as rain coats, boots, and safety glasses to protect yourself from floodwater as pets shake during the bathing process.”
On vaccination: “Dogs exposed to floodwaters should be vaccinated against a disease called Leptospirosis. This vaccine is available at most veterinary practices. Make sure your pet is up-to-date on vaccines such as rabies and Leptospirosis.”
And the trigger that belongs on this page: “If your pet has ingested floodwater, vomiting or diarrhea may result. Seek veterinary care if this occurs.”
Two practical notes where that fact sheet meets this one. First, the bath needs water, and if your well is the source of that water, the bath is inside the same problem as the bowl. Maine’s instruction that highly chlorinated water should not be used for bathing, and EPA’s boxed warning that people washing with water from a flooded well risk getting sick, both apply to washing an animal. Plan bath water into the alternate supply rather than discovering the conflict with a muddy dog in a tub.
Second, an animal that has already ingested floodwater is a veterinary question and not a water-planning question. Louisiana’s sentence above is the trigger. Where This Page Sits Next to the Rest
Four situations look similar from a distance and have different answers, so it is worth being explicit about which one you are in.
The municipal tap and an advisory. Your water comes from a utility, the tap runs, and an agency has told you not to drink it. That is a different document set with a different instruction, including advisory types where boiling is the wrong move entirely. The well with no power. The water is fine and the pump cannot lift it. That is an outage problem with an outage fix, and it is measured in hours to days rather than weeks. It tells a well household to store the animals’ water before the outage; it deliberately does not convert the tank figures into days of pet drinking water, and it routes that arithmetic to our per-animal water math. If a storm took your power and flooded your well, you are in both pages at once: pre-fill from that one, then run the test-and-disinfect cycle from this one.
Field water and go-bag treatment. Tablets, portable filters and boiling for water you did not draw from your own plumbing. Our pet water purification comparison covers what those products publish about themselves, including the limits they publish.
This page. The well is yours, nobody will issue you a notice, the tap may still run and the water may still look normal, and the fix is measured in weeks. What the animals drink across that window is the whole subject.
Your Flooded-Well Pet Water Checklist
- Treat the well as out of service for every animal the moment you suspect floodwater reached or influenced it, before you touch anything. NGWA’s line is that it is unsafe for potable use until the well has been evaluated and tested.
- Do not turn on the pump. EPA and NGWA both open with that, and EPA notes that rubber boots and gloves are not adequate protection from electric shock. Get an electrician, a registered well driller or a pump contractor to clear it.
- Buy or haul the alternate supply first, before starting any procedure. Maine’s Drinking Water Program states the alternate source is necessary until the process is completed; NGWA and North Carolina DHHS both name bottled water.
- Size that supply from your own animals’ weights and the prescribed waits, not from optimism. Merck’s mammalian range is 44 to 66 mL/kg, which by our own conversion is roughly 0.67 to 1.01 fluid ounces per pound, and the agency-published testing waits start at one to two weeks. For a rabbit, use Merck’s separate rabbit figure of approximately 120 mL/kg/day instead of the mammalian range. Then add a separate allowance for bathing any animal that was in the floodwater, which Louisiana’s Department of Health instructs and which a drinking rate does not cover. Keep that allowance in a second, clearly separate container so a bath cannot be taken out of the drinking supply, and size it yourself against the animal you actually have, because no document read for this page publishes a bath volume.
- Stop refilling every plumbed or refilled animal appliance: auto-refill bowls, circulating fountains, gravity waterers, misting reservoirs. Do not top any of them up. Empty any appliance the floodwater itself reached, and any that was filled after you first suspected the well was influenced. Water that was already in a closed appliance before the flood, in a container the floodwater never reached, is water you already have. Keep it, and count it toward the alternate supply.
- If your household has automatic waterers, follow New Mexico State Extension’s order of operations: alternate water for the animals first, then make sure the chlorine reaches those outlets during the disinfection.
- Plan the flush discharge route before the flush, and pick a spot the animals do not use. If you keep fish or a pond, this is the step Pennsylvania DEP’s warning about aquatic animals is written for.
- Keep animals confined away from the discharge area for the whole flush and until it has drained and dried. That confinement is this site’s own recommendation rather than a published instruction, and it is the cheapest way to close the gap.
- Read EPA’s own scoping of its procedure before you treat its steps as clearance. The fact sheet states that “Drilled, driven or bored wells are best disinfected by a well or pump contractor, because it is difficult for the private owner to thoroughly disinfect these wells.” It also states that “The suggestions below are intended to supplement flood precautions issued by State and local health authorities.”
- Note the contact interval your own document publishes, and plan the animals’ water against the longest interval you are holding. The published floors range from four hours to twelve.
- If you must use well water in the interim, follow the boiling instruction your own state health department publishes, and use the more conservative altitude threshold if you sit between the published figures. Boiling addresses germs, not chemicals.
- If you suspect fuel, heating oil, an agricultural chemical or an industrial release rather than bacteria, do not disinfect and do not boil. Use bottled water for every animal and call your local health department, as New York State DOH instructs.
- Call your local health department on day one and ask two questions: what its testing turnaround currently is, and whether free sampling kits are available in your area.
- Keep the animals on the alternate supply until a laboratory result comes back. That is this site’s own position where the published guidance differs, and it follows the more protective of the two answers.
- Put the follow-up tests in a calendar rather than in your memory. Depending on whose document you are following, that is a retest at 7 to 10 days, 10 to 14 days or about two weeks, then again at two to three months.
- If an animal drank floodwater or well water before you realised, or shows vomiting, diarrhoea or lethargy, call your veterinarian. Louisiana’s Department of Health names ingestion of floodwater as a reason to seek veterinary care.
- Write your exotics practice’s number next to your veterinarian’s if you keep birds or reptiles, because the mammalian range on this page does not cover them and we did not locate a published daily volume for either. If you keep rabbits, size from Merck’s separate rabbit figure of approximately 120 mL/kg/day rather than from the mammalian range, because Merck states the rabbit figure is about twice the amount usually calculated for an equally sized dog or cat.
The Version You Do on a Quiet Afternoon
Three things done before a flood turn all of the above from a scramble into a chore.
Find out who tests water where you live, and what it costs you in days. EPA’s private wells guidance says to test immediately when conditions near the well have changed significantly, and names flooding first in that list. The number to have is your county or state health department’s, and the question to ask is turnaround. During a disaster that answer changes, which is exactly why you want the baseline before one.
Know your well. Depth, casing diameter, age, whether the cap is watertight and vermin proof, and where the discharge from a flush would actually go. EPA’s own risk note is that wells more than ten years old or less than fifty feet deep are likely to be contaminated even without apparent damage, so knowing which side of that you are on changes how fast you act. New York State DOH lists the physical improvements that reduce the risk next time, including extending the casing above the expected flood level and installing a watertight and vermin proof well cap.
Store water for the animals as a standing habit, not as a flood purchase. Every document on this page assumes an alternate supply exists. None of them tells you where to get one at short notice in a county that just flooded. Frequently asked questions
Can my dog or cat drink water from a private well that was flooded?
Not until the well has been evaluated, disinfected and tested, and on this site's reading not until a laboratory result comes back. The National Ground Water Association states that any well that has been flooded, or is suspected of having been influenced by floodwaters, "needs to be viewed as unsafe for potable use until the well has been evaluated and tested to make sure it's safe for use as drinking water", and tells owners to use an alternative supply such as bottled water. EPA's flooded-well fact sheet carries a boxed warning that people drinking or washing with water from a flooded private well "will risk getting sick." Those documents are written about a household rather than about a pet, with one exception: New York State's Department of Health states that after flooding the water in a well may be contaminated with waterborne pathogens "that can cause serious illness in humans and pets." Give the animals commercially bottled water, or water from an unaffected supply, for the whole time the well is out of service. If an animal has already been drinking it, or has been drinking floodwater, call your veterinarian rather than waiting to see what happens.
How long after shock chlorinating a well can my pets drink the water again?
There is no single published answer, and the honest version has two separate clocks. The first is the contact period while the chlorine sits in the well and the plumbing, and during that window every document we opened forbids drinking the water: published floors run four hours (Pennsylvania DEP), six hours (EPA), eight hours (North Carolina DHHS, New York State DOH, Minnesota DOH and New Mexico State University Extension) and twelve hours (University of Georgia Extension, and Maine's Drinking Water Program at a 12-hour minimum), with New York State DOH and New Mexico State University Extension preferring 12 to 24 hours on top of their eight-hour floor. New Mexico State University Extension is the one that names animals in that window: during disinfection, "water from the system is not suitable for consumption or extended contact by people or animals." The second clock is what happens after the flush, and there the issuers split. EPA's fact sheet says the system should now be disinfected and you can now use the water, then test 7 to 10 days later, and that fact sheet scopes its own procedure before the steps begin: "The suggestions below are intended to supplement flood precautions issued by State and local health authorities." So that step is part of a supplement to state and local precautions rather than a standalone federal clearance. University of Georgia Extension, North Carolina DHHS, New York State DOH and Minnesota DOH all say to keep using bottled or boiled water until a laboratory reports the water safe. This site's own position, stated as ours rather than borrowed from any agency, is to keep the animals on the alternate supply until the laboratory result arrives, because that is the more protective of the two published answers.
What do I give my animals while the well is being disinfected and tested?
Bottled water, or water carried in from a supply the flood did not touch, staged before you start rather than found afterwards. Maine's Drinking Water Program states it as a planning step: "It will be necessary to provide an alternate source of drinking water until the well shocking process is completed; use of the water system must be minimized since very high levels of chlorine will be present." The National Ground Water Association tells flooded-well owners to use an alternative supply such as bottled water. If bottled water is not available, three health departments publish a boiling instruction for the interim: North Carolina DHHS says to bring clear water to a rolling boil for at least one minute, and three minutes at elevations above 6,500 feet; Minnesota DOH says the water must be brought to a full rolling boil for at least one minute; New York State DOH gives the same one-minute figure. Note that EPA's Frequent Questions About Flooded Homes page publishes a different altitude threshold, three minutes above 5,280 feet, so if your house sits between 5,280 and 6,500 feet, boil for the longer three minutes rather than one. Boiling addresses germs and does not address chemicals, so if your notice or your own suspicion involves fuel or a chemical release, boiled water is not the answer and you need bottled water and a call to your health department.
Is chlorinated water from the well flush dangerous to pets, fish or a backyard pond?
For fish and aquatic animals, one state agency says so directly. Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection instructs well owners to avoid discharging water containing detectable chlorine into storm drains, waterways, ponds and creeks, and states: "Fish and aquatic animals are very sensitive to very low levels of chlorine and can be killed." Penn State Extension makes the same point about spring disinfection, warning that high-chlorine water reaching a stream, pond or wetland may cause environmental damage, "especially a fish kill." For dogs, cats and other land animals the published instructions are indirect: EPA says to run the flush water into a safe area where it will not disturb plants, lakes, streams or septic tanks, Minnesota DOH says to avoid running chlorinated water into a septic system or onto lawns or gardens, and New Mexico State University Extension says chlorinated water flushed from a sprinkler or drip system should be directed away from landscaping plants and lawn areas. None of those documents mentions an animal drinking from the puddle the discharge makes, so the following is this site's own reasoning rather than a published instruction: keep animals off the discharge area while you flush and until it has drained and dried, and do not let a dog work a hose end or a low spot in the yard during a flush. If you keep fish or a pond, treat the discharge route as the first thing to plan, not the last.
How much water should I have on hand per animal while the well is out of service?
Work from your own animals' weights, and expect to be buying or hauling water for more than a weekend. The Merck Veterinary Manual's small-animal nutrition chapter, last updated September 2024, discusses approaches used to estimate daily water needs and states: "In a thermoneutral environment, most mammalian species need ~44–66 mL/kg body weight." That is one range covering mammals generally rather than a separate figure for dogs and a separate figure for cats, and the quoted sentence itself does not carry the words per day. Converting it is arithmetic rather than a citation, and the conversion below is this site's own: 44 to 66 millilitres per kilogram works out to roughly 0.67 to 1.01 US fluid ounces per pound of body weight. Merck also notes that animals eating mostly canned food generally drink less than animals eating mostly dry food, and that clean, fresh water should be available at all times. Multiply your figure by the number of days you expect the well to be out of service, and use the prescribed testing waits rather than an optimistic guess: EPA publishes a test 7 to 10 days after disinfection, and New Mexico State University Extension publishes sampling approximately two weeks after flushing. Rabbits are a specific exception worth knowing before you shop. Merck's rabbit nutrition chapter publishes a separate figure in its section on water requirements: "It has been shown in metabolic studies that a rabbit will consume water at a rate of approximately 120 mL/kg/day." Merck adds that this is about twice the amount usually calculated for an equally sized dog or cat, so a rabbit household that scales from the mammalian range above will buy roughly half of what Merck's rabbit figure implies. We did not locate an equivalent daily drinking-water volume for birds or reptiles, so for those animals ask the exotics practice that already sees them rather than scaling a mammal figure.
My well was flooded but the tap still runs and the water looks clear. Does that mean it is fine?
No, and two agencies address that specific situation. EPA's flooded-well fact sheet states that wells "more than 10 years old or less than 50 feet deep are likely to be contaminated, even if there is no apparent damage." New York State's Department of Health states: "Even if your well is operational, you should disinfect your water until it is tested and found suitable for drinking", and adds that changes in the water's appearance, taste or odor may indicate possible contamination, which means the absence of those changes is not evidence the water is safe. EPA's Region 4 office put the same point in one sentence during the 2024 Helene response, quoting Acting Southeast Regional Administrator Jeaneanne Gettle: "Testing your well water is the only way to know if the storm caused harmful contamination". Clear water is not tested water. Until you have a laboratory result, treat the tap as out of service for the animals as well as for the people.
Does disinfecting the well fix everything the flood put in the water?
No, and EPA says so on the same fact sheet that gives the disinfection steps: "Well disinfection will not provide protection from pesticides, heavy metals and other types of non-biological contamination. If such contamination is suspected, due to the nearness of these contaminant sources, special treatment is required." The same document cautions that because of the extent of a flood and the speed and direction of groundwater flow, a well "may not be a safe source of water for many months after the flood." It adds that long range precautions, including repeated testing, will be necessary. New York State's Department of Health separates the two problems explicitly: its flooded-well fact sheet addresses possible pathogen contamination, and it tells owners who believe the well may be contaminated by petroleum or other chemicals not to use the well and to contact their local health department or the state spill hotline immediately. Pennsylvania DEP also scopes its own procedure, describing it as a temporary measure for bacteriological contamination that does not include the organisms causing giardiasis or cryptosporidiosis. Boiling does not remove chemicals either, so a chemical suspicion means bottled water for every animal in the house and a call rather than a pot on the stove.
Does shock chlorination permanently fix a contaminated well?
Not reliably, and the most useful number on that comes from Penn State Extension, whose page was updated May 29, 2025: "When done properly, shock chlorination will kill all the bacteria existing in a well. A recent Penn State study of wells contaminated by coliform bacteria found that shock chlorination and installation of a sanitary well cap successfully removed the bacteria for one year in 15 percent of the wells. This procedure was most successful in wells that had small numbers of coliform bacteria (fewer than 10 colonies per 100 mL) and no E. coli bacteria." New Mexico State University Extension makes the same point from the other direction: if the groundwater itself is the source of bacteria, the system will be contaminated again when that water is pumped into the plumbing, and continuous chlorination or another disinfection method will be necessary. That is why every one of these documents publishes a follow-up test rather than stopping at the first clean result, and it is why a household with animals should treat the stored-water habit as permanent rather than as a one-time chore. If a retest comes back positive, the answer is your local health department and a licensed well contractor, not another round of bleach on your own judgment.
