Feeding Station and Trail Camera for a Cat Displaced by a Disaster: Station Before Trap, and What a Burn or Flood Zone Changes

Some pet emergencies outrun any checklist. If an animal is collapsing, struggling to breathe, or was exposed to something toxic, stop reading and call your veterinarian or the nearest emergency animal hospital now. They also write "Hence, leaving abundant food in bowls on the ground may set the cats up for coyote predation", and, in the same discussion, "There could be other reasons for the short lifespan of the cats, as our study was not set up to identify the source of mortality." That is a colony study in a suburb, not a lost-cat study and not a disaster study.
  • There is a documented conflict between the station and burn-zone pet guidance, and no source resolves it. Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, writing about ash and debris hazards, states: "Keep pets from eating or licking anything on the ground. Do not allow pets to drink from puddles or water bowls that have been left outside. Feed pets indoors and do not put food or treats directly on the ground, use a bowl that can be washed and cleaned after use." A feeding station in an ash zone is food and water left outside, on the ground. That county sheet is written about a pet you already have at home, not about a station set for a cat you are trying to find, and nothing opened for this page tells you how to weigh the two. Ask your veterinarian and your county animal services which risk they would take.
  • The distance evidence people quote comes from a questionnaire about ordinary lost cats, and its authors describe it as such. Huang and colleagues, writing in Animals in 2018, state: "A retrospective case series was conducted where self-selected participants whose cat had gone missing provided data in an online questionnaire." Its abstract reports "75% of cats were found within 500 m of the point of escape", and separately that "Up to 75% of cats with outdoor access traveled 1609 m, further than the distance traveled by indoor-only cats (137 m; p ≤ 0.001)." Those are two different findings and search summaries routinely merge them. Read in full on August 11, 2026 and again on August 24, 2026, that paper does not contain the words disaster, flood, fire, hurricane, evacuation or wildfire.
  • The timing numbers from that same 2018 Huang questionnaire study describe a probability that flattens, not a deadline and not a curve that keeps climbing. Its results report: "Of missing cats, approximately one-third (34%; 95% CI 31% to 37%) were found alive by day 7, 50% (95% CI 47% to 53%) by day 30, and 56% (95% CI 53% to 59%) by day 61. There was little increase in probability of being found alive after day 61." It reports 61% found alive by one year and 64% by four years. What its curve measures is a cat being found alive, with being found dead treated as a competing risk, which is narrower than the looser word recovered. Re-read in full on August 24, 2026 by two independent routes, the PMC article page and the Europe PMC full-text XML, it is still a questionnaire about ordinary lost cats in intact neighborhoods, so this page reads it as a reason to search hard in the first days and not as a date to stop.
  • No published source opened for this page gives a search radius, a station spacing, a number of stations, a camera height, a trigger interval, a bait quantity or a feeding schedule for a disaster zone. The closest thing to a height figure is a caution rather than an instruction: the Missing Animal Response Network's surveillance page, credited to Danielle Robertson of Lost Pet Research and Recovery, states that on a trail-camera site aimed primarily at deer hunters, “the height that they suggest placing the camera (24”-36”) is too high for cats and small dogs, but most of the information is applicable to setting up a camera to locate missing pets.” It names no replacement figure and neither will this page.

If you need to talk to someone right now, these three lines are open 24 hours a day, every day, and all three were read on their own websites on August 11, 2026. SAMHSA’s Disaster Distress Helpline page, last updated 09/26/2025, says “Call or text 1-800-985-5990.” In Spanish: “Llama o envía un mensaje de texto 1-800-985-5990 presiona “2.”” For Deaf and Hard of Hearing ASL callers, that page says: “Please text or call the Disaster Distress Helpline at 1-800-985-5990 using your preferred Relay provider.” SAMHSA also states “There is no need to give any identifying information when you contact DDH”, and, in the sentence after it, that a counselor may ask for some basic information at the end of the call, that those questions are optional, and that they are intended to help SAMHSA keep track of the types of calls it receives. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline takes calls and texts at 988 and chat at 988lifeline.org, and its site states “The 988 Lifeline is available 24/7/365. Your conversations are free and confidential.” The Veterans Crisis Line publishes “Dial 988 then Press 1” and “Text 838255”, offers chat online, and states “You don’t have to be enrolled in VA benefits or health care to connect.” Talking to a licensed mental health professional about any of this is a reasonable step.

Your street does not smell like your street. The fence line the cat used as a boundary is on the ground, the neighbor’s shed it hid under is gone or is full of standing water, the sheriff has a checkpoint at the end of the block, and the search advice you have read all afternoon assumes a neighborhood that still exists. That is the specific problem this page is about: the one method that keeps working when the landmarks do not, which is a feeding station watched by a camera, set before any trap goes out, in a place you may only be allowed to visit inside a window somebody else controls.

Our post-disaster reunification workflow is the page for the first forty-eight hours: the animal control report, the microchip, the database filing, the tight physical search. It covers those in the order that gets the best odds and this page does not restate them. Start there if you have not filed anything yet, because a station and a camera are slow instruments and the reports work while you sleep. This page picks up at the point where the reports are in, the physical search has run, and the ordinary tactics have hit a landscape that broke them.

Two promises about how it is written. Every instruction below is attributed to whoever actually published it, and where nobody published anything, this page says so in plain words instead of filling the hole. There are more holes than you would expect.

What the Method Is, and Who Publishes It

The station-and-camera method is not new and it is not folk knowledge. It is what experienced searchers do, and two organizations describe it in writing.

The Missing Animal Response Network, which trains lost-pet searchers and consultants, publishes the cat version. Its lost cat behavior page states: “Sometimes setting a humane trap is not the best method to use to recover a missing cat. In many cases, the use of digital wildlife cameras combined with feeding stations is a better way to confirm possible sightings or to confirm that your displaced cat is still in the immediate area.” It then explains what the camera is for: “The concept is setting out food with a wildlife camera that will snap photos of all the animals that eat that food so that when you come back the next morning, you can pull the SD card, put it in your computer, and see photos of raccoon, raccoon, raccoon, CALICO!! THERE IS MY CAT!!” And it names what the picture buys you: “From that point, you could work to strategically and humanely trap your cat while avoiding the raccoons and other cats.” The sentence immediately after that one is the network pointing at expertise rather than at a do-it-yourself procedure: “This is something that any of the trained resources listed in our Pet Detective Directory could consult with you about if you decide to pursue this technique.”

Read the sequence in that quoted passage, because it is the whole argument of this page. The station and camera come first and produce information. The trap comes second and acts on it. The same page states the reason a camera earns its place at all: “The use of cameras to recover lost and displaced cats is a primary way to confirm a cat’s location and can provide details on where to place humane traps.”

Humane World for Animals publishes the same order on its lost dog page, and it is worth quoting even though your animal is a cat, because it is the clearest published statement of the sequence anywhere we read. Under the heading Bring in technology, it states: “Start placing food and water in a safe spot within the area your dog is known to visit (a large plastic storage container turned on its side can protect the food from rain).” Then: “Use a motion-activated camera to see if your dog is eating the food. Once you know your dog is visiting the feeding station and what time they typically show up, you can set a humane trap to capture them.” That page is about dogs, its parenthetical about chasing is about dogs, and the cat behavior described below is not on it. What transfers is the order of operations, not the species.

The third source is the one that describes the surveillance half in detail. The Missing Animal Response Network publishes a Surveillance Cameras page that opens by crediting somebody else for it: “Thank you to Danielle Robertson of Lost Pet Research and Recovery for permission to share her information.” That page states: “Using some method of surveillance can drastically increase the success of locating and catching your missing pet when using feeding stations and/or trapping.” It also states what a camera is actually being asked to prove: wildlife cameras “can help provide evidence that the lost pet is in the area and whether s/he will enter a humane trap if one is set up.”

So the method has a shape: put out food, point a camera at it, learn which animals come and when, and only then decide whether and where to trap. What none of those pages does is write that shape for a place where the buildings burned down or the water is still in the street.

What a Disaster Actually Removes

Four things, and each one breaks a different assumption inside the method.

It removes the scent map. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s disaster recovery guidance names this in one sentence: “Remember that familiar scents and landmarks may have changed, and this can confuse your animals.” That single line undercuts a lot of ordinary lost-cat advice, because much of it assumes the animal can orient itself back toward a known territory. The Missing Animal Response Network’s description of displacement assumes the same thing from the other direction: it defines a displaced cat as one “unexpectedly transplanted into an unfamiliar area,” and after a fire or a flood the unfamiliar area may be the cat’s own address.

It removes the structures the method quietly depends on. Humane World’s instruction is to place food “in a safe spot”, and its example of weather protection is a plastic storage container on its side. The ordinary version of this method leans on a deck, a porch, a garage, a shed, a fence corner. Those are the same features the Missing Animal Response Network says a frightened cat hides under: “Cats that are afraid (and cats that are injured) will seek areas of concealment such as under a deck, under a house, under a porch, or in heavy brush and they will not meow!” In a burn scar, several of those categories no longer exist, and in a flood, the ones that do exist may be full of water or unsound.

It removes free access. This is the one that most often decides whether the method is available to you at all, and it gets its own section below.

It removes the people. The ordinary method assumes neighbors who will let you search their yard, watch for a cat, or tell you what they saw at dawn. After an evacuation, most of them are not there. It also assumes a responding animal agency you can call, and NASAAEP’s 2023 Animal Search and Rescue best practices are candid that a disaster changes what that agency answers. Listing what an agency having jurisdiction has to decide after a disaster, the document puts “Stray animals that are not contained” in its example list of non-priority calls, alongside nuisance complaints and wildlife calls where an animal is not injured. That is not indifference. It is triage, printed in a best-practices document, and it explains why the station work often ends up in the owner’s hands. The same document also states that “ASAR teams are typically deployed for immediate needs following a disaster. As soon as immediate needs are met and the AHJ can resume calls to service for their area, ASAR teams will demobilize.” The professional search has a shorter clock than yours does.

Before You Place Anything: Who Controls the Ground

This section comes before the method rather than after it, because in a disaster zone the access question can end the conversation and there is no point planning a station you are not allowed to visit.

Two organizations publish do-not-enter statements in the exact context of searching for animals. Los Angeles County Department of Public Health’s pet safety fact sheet for returning to areas affected by fires, smoke and ash opens its recovery section with this: “Do not attempt to return to disaster-affected areas until cleared to do so by local authorities.” Pasadena Humane, on its Eaton Fire animal assistance page, is more specific about the exact thing you are contemplating: “For your safety and the safety of animals, do not enter burned areas to rescue or search for animals. Trained responders are on-site and equipped to handle these situations.”

Notice what the second one is and is not. It is one organization’s public message during one incident in one county, and it should be read that way rather than as a national rule. What makes it worth quoting here is that it is aimed precisely at the reader of this page: somebody who wants to go into a burned area to look for an animal.

The agency that decides is named in the best-practices literature. NASAAEP’s Animal Search and Rescue document states: “Within every community or recognized geographic region managed by a form of government, there will be an Agency Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) responsible for the care of animals following a disaster. In most communities, the AHJ is animal control.” It also states that “ASAR is tasked by the AHJ and supported by emergency services, animal care and control, and trained responders.” So the office to call about placing a station, borrowing a trap, or getting a camera checked while the zone is closed is your local animal control or county animal services, and in a declared incident, whichever agency has been designated to run the animal response.

There is a published expectation that the agency tells the public where to go. The same NASAAEP document lists the questions a public information officer has to answer after a disaster, and two of them are yours: “Where should the public go to look for a lost pet?” and “Where should the public go with a found pet?” The Mass Care and Sheltering volume goes further, stating “It is imperative that the Agency Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) manages the reunification efforts and utilizes the Public Information Officer (PIO) for messaging”, and listing what that messaging should include, among them “Utilization of a dedicated phone number to manage lost/found animals” and “Dedicated location for people to view found reports or look for their lost animals.” If your incident has one of those, it is the first phone call, before any equipment leaves your car.

Trapping is not a thing you simply do. Holding and moving a free-roaming animal is governed by local ordinance, and during a declared incident the response has an agency in charge of it. Ask, before you set anything, whether you may trap on the property in question, what happens if you catch a neighbor’s cat, and whether the agency wants to know about a station you place. Humane World’s own line points at the same office for equipment: “Most animal control agencies and many rescue groups will have a trap you can borrow.” The Missing Animal Response Network says the same about supply, describing humane traps as “available for rental from your local shelter or veterinarian or for sale at hardware stores, pet stores, or online.” Both routes run through someone you can also ask the permission question.

If the animal is behind a closure and you are outside it, that is a different problem with different channels. The Evidence About Where a Displaced Cat Is, and Its Limits

You will see two kinds of claims about this. One comes from a peer-reviewed study, and one comes from an experienced network’s field observations. They are different kinds of evidence and they deserve different weight.

The study, quoted with its own design attached

The paper people are quoting when they tell you a number is Huang and colleagues, in the journal Animals in 2018, titled Search Methods Used to Locate Missing Cats and Locations Where Missing Cats Are Found. Its authors describe what it is in the first line of the abstract: “A retrospective case series was conducted where self-selected participants whose cat had gone missing provided data in an online questionnaire.”

Its headline findings, quoted separately because they are separate findings:

  • “Of the 1210 study cats, only 61% were found within one year, with 34% recovered alive by the owner within 7 days.”
  • “Few cats were found alive after 90 days.”
  • “There was evidence that physical searching increased the chance of finding the cat alive (p = 0.073), and 75% of cats were found within 500 m of the point of escape.”
  • “Up to 75% of cats with outdoor access traveled 1609 m, further than the distance traveled by indoor-only cats (137 m; p ≤ 0.001).”

Those last two sentences are the ones that get welded together in search summaries into a single confident range. They are not a range. The first is about the whole group measured from the escape point. The second is a comparison between cats with outdoor access and indoor-only cats. Quoting them apart is the only honest way to carry them.

Now the part that decides how much of this you should carry into a burn scar. The paper’s own limitations section states: “The strong human-animal attachment respondents reported having with their cat could also mean that respondents and thus their responses are not representative of the general population, but of a sub-sample of the general population that is more closely bonded to their cat than average. The generalizability of the findings may thus be limited, e.g., the study population may have comprised people more likely to put in more effort to find their cat than the average pet owner.” The same section reports that a substantial proportion of respondents had lost their cat more than six months before answering, with a median of 731 days, and warns of recall errors as a result.

And the thing nobody says out loud: this is a study of ordinary cats getting out of ordinary houses in intact neighborhoods. Read in full on August 11, 2026 and again on August 24, 2026, the words disaster, flood, fire, hurricane, evacuation and wildfire do not appear anywhere in it. Its distance figures were measured in places where the fences, sheds, hedges and gardens that shape a cat’s movement were all still standing. This page will not restate them as a search radius for a landscape where those are gone, and neither should anything else you read.

What does travel, because it is about method rather than geography, is the finding on searching. The paper reports that “A physical search was the most common search method used (used for 96% of cats)” and concludes that “a thorough physical search is likely to increase the chances of finding cats alive”, a sentence that continues in the source rather than ending there. Its abstract attaches timing to that in the authors’ own words: “These findings suggest that thorough physical searching is a useful strategy, and should be conducted within the first week after cats go missing.”

That is a statement about front-loading the search, and the paper’s own numbers are the reason for it. Its results section reports: “Of missing cats, approximately one-third (34%; 95% CI 31% to 37%) were found alive by day 7, 50% (95% CI 47% to 53%) by day 30, and 56% (95% CI 53% to 59%) by day 61.” The sentence directly after that one is the one that decides how to read all of it: “There was little increase in probability of being found alive after day 61.” The same paragraph continues: “By one year, 61% of missing cats had been found alive (95% CI 57% to 64%) and this had increased to only 64% (95% CI 60% to 67%) by 4 years.” The conclusions section puts it in one line: “There is about a 33% chance that a missing cat will be found within 7 days, and about 56% by 2 months; few cats are recovered after that.” The curve climbs steeply through the first two months and then flattens. It does not keep climbing for a year. An earlier version of this page said that it did, which was wrong and contradicted the paper’s own sentence quoted above about 90 days; it is corrected here against the paper, re-read in full on August 24, 2026 by two independent routes, the PMC article page and the Europe PMC full-text XML.

Read what that curve actually measures, because the word that circulates about it is looser. The outcome is a cat being found alive, and the paper says of the figure itself: “Being found dead was treated as a competing risk.” Recovered, as people use it, blurs found alive together with found dead and never found. This page keeps them apart.

None of that is a deadline, and this page does not read it as one. It is a probability measured on self-selected questionnaire respondents about ordinary lost cats in intact neighborhoods, and every limitation quoted above applies to it. What it does tell you is that the odds are concentrated in the first days, which is an argument for getting a station and a camera out early rather than an argument for taking them down on a date. The station and the camera do not replace the physical search. They tell you where to point it.

The field observation, quoted with its own confidence attached

The Missing Animal Response Network’s account of displacement is not a study and does not present itself as one. It states: “When cats are displaced into an unfamiliar area, the cat is most likely hiding in silence, often not far from the escape point, and they will not meow!” It gives the reason: “This is because cats are territorial and their primary protective measure from predators is to hide in silence.” And it closes the loop on the interpretation owners reach for at three in the morning: “Their behavior has nothing to do with whether the cat loves you, whether it recognizes your voice, or whether it can smell you–it has everything to do with the fact that a frightened cat will hide in silence!”

The same page describes what it calls the threshold factor: “Many of these cats initially hide in silence, but eventually, break cover and meow, return to their home or the escape point (window or door), or finally enter a humane trap. While some cats take only hours or a few days to reach their threshold, many others take several days (typically ten to twelve days) before they break cover.” Read the sentence that follows it, because it is the network marking its own confidence: “We suspect the threshold is reached due to their thirst, although more research needs to be conducted into this lost cat behavior.”

That is a field observation with an honest label on it. It is why a station is worth setting even when nothing appears on the first night, and it is not a timetable.

The same page also notes that temperament matters more than any average: “A cat’s individual temperament can range anywhere from a bold “clown-like” cat to the other end of the spectrum which is a catatonic “feral-like” cat,” and that “Recovery techniques should be geared around a missing cat’s unique, individual temperament.” The two sentences that follow that one are what turn it into a fork, and they are worth carrying rather than dropping: “If he or she is skittish, he/she will more likely be nearby hiding in fear and you’ll need to use a humane trap to recover him/her. If he or she is gregarious, he/she could easily travel several blocks (even a mile or two) and you’ll need to knock on doors and post fluorescent posters at major intersections in the area.” That second branch is not a station-and-camera job at all, and after a disaster the doors you would knock on may be empty. You know your cat. The averages do not.

Station Before Trap, and Why the Order Is Load-Bearing

The temptation in a disaster is to skip straight to the trap, because a trap feels like action and a bowl of food feels like waiting. Three published reasons to resist that.

A trap set in the wrong place catches nothing and teaches you nothing. The Missing Animal Response Network’s stated purpose for the camera is that it “can provide details on where to place humane traps.” Placement is the variable, and a station plus a camera is how you learn it.

A trap can be the wrong instrument for the situation. The network is explicit that cameras with stations work better than a trap in specific circumstances: “Cameras work especially well in cases where a cat is displaced in an apartment complex where there are zillions of cats, in areas where there are many raccoons, or in other situations where a humane trap would be difficult to use.” A disaster zone with unfamiliar animals moving through it and an owner who can only visit sometimes has more in common with that list than with a quiet suburb.

A trap has a monitoring duty attached that a station does not. Humane World’s instruction is unambiguous and it is the last sentence of that paragraph rather than an aside: “Be sure to monitor the trap and quickly release any wildlife or other animal you unintentionally capture.” In a zone with restricted access hours, ask yourself honestly whether you can meet that duty before you set a trap. If you cannot get back in for two days, a set trap is not a search tool.

There is one more reason specific to this landscape, and it is worth being plain that it is our reasoning rather than a published rule. A station is cheap to move and a trap is not. The first week in a changed landscape is largely about finding out where the animals are actually walking now, because the routes you knew are gone. A station that produces the wrong answer costs you a bag of food. A trap in the same wrong place costs you the trap, the trips, and the monitoring duty.

What Else Comes to the Food, and the One Study That Measured It

This is the part of the method that most pages leave out, and there is a peer-reviewed measurement of it.

Danielle Robertson, whose surveillance material the Missing Animal Response Network republishes, is direct about the disagreement in her own field: “There is a lot of disagreement around the use of cat feeding stations since they can attract other wildlife including predators that may harm cats. In particular, coyotes are a potential threat to cats in most areas of the US. Some pet detectives will never or rarely use a feeding station due to the potential risks involved. However, there are also potential risks to not providing food if the cat cannot be found and caught quickly.” Read that whole passage rather than the first half. The risk runs in both directions, and she says so.

She also names the practical conflict with the way colony feeders manage the problem: “When used for feral cats, most Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) sites recommend feeding the cats once a day at a set time, and only leaving the food out for 30 minutes. Any remaining food and bowls should be picked up to avoid attracting any wildlife. Unfortunately, this is not practical when using a feeding station for a lost cat. Many lost cats only come out at night and generally avoid human activity. It often takes several days and sometimes a week or longer of setting a feeding station before the lost cat appears on camera.”

That is the trade in one paragraph. The feeding regime that limits wildlife is the one least likely to be running when a nocturnal, frightened cat finally comes out.

The measurement

Robertson writes that “I was only able to locate a single study on coyotes and cat feeding stations”, and names it. We went and read it rather than taking the summary.

Mitchell, Strohbach, Sorlien and Marshall published Confluence and Implications of Cats, Coyotes, and Other Mesopredators at a Feral Cat Feeding Station in Society & Animals, volume 30, issue 7, in 2022. Its abstract states: “This paper explores feedbacks between feral domestic cats, coyotes (Canis latrans), raccoons (Procyon lotor), and skunks (Mephitis mephitis) at a TNR feral cat colony in Rhode Island, USA. A total of 12,272 photographs from a motion-activated camera were analyzed. Cat population size and visitation frequency of wildlife were estimated during three different feeding regimes. Abundant food on the ground was associated with increased wildlife visits, while elevated or limited food was associated with decreased wildlife visits.”

The pattern it reports, in the authors’ own words: “Coyote, raccoon, and skunk visits were highest when cats were fed abundant food at ground level; only raccoon visits were common when food was just as abundant but elevated to table height (other mesopredators, including coyotes, could not or would not jump or climb up); coyote, raccoon, and skunk visits were low when food was limited on the ground and generally gone before they arrived at night.”

And the sentence that gives the finding its weight: “Hence, leaving abundant food in bowls on the ground may set the cats up for coyote predation.”

Now read what follows in that same discussion, because the authors qualify their own strongest claim. Writing about why so few cats at the colony were older than three years, they state: “There could be other reasons for the short lifespan of the cats, as our study was not set up to identify the source of mortality.” They report that they found no direct evidence of predation in this study, and the abstract itself is hedged: the cats “appeared to have short life spans, which could have been due to predation by coyotes.” Their next sentence puts their position back on the table without overstating it: “However, if cat colonies are managed in a way that attracts coyotes, the likelihood of encounters increases.” That is the shape of the finding. Presentation changes who shows up, and who shows up changes the odds of an encounter, and the study did not measure what killed anything.

The design limits matter as much as the finding. This was one feral colony in Johnston, Rhode Island, watched over two years, with the feeding regime changed twice by the colony’s own tenders rather than assigned by the researchers. It is not a lost-cat study, it is not a disaster study, and coyote behavior differs by region. Take from it what it actually establishes: how food is presented changes which animals show up and when, and that is a knob you have.

Robertson does publish measures of her own, on the same page, with her own caveats attached, and they answer this more directly than the colony study does. On making the food inaccessible, she writes “If the coyotes cannot access the cat food, they are less likely to continue visiting the feeding station”, noting that this is what the elevated-platform regime in the Mitchell study found, and cautioning from her own experience that “not all cats are great jumpers and some cats, in particular old or overweight cats, might have difficulty reaching the platform.” On the alternative, she writes that the food “could be placed on the ground, but near suitable escape routes or secure shelter for the cat”, giving the example of “a shed or deck that a cat could hide underneath, but a coyote would not fit” or, where no natural escape route exists, secured “12 inch x 6 foot PVC pipes.” For a longer-term setup she describes a cat house built with “a door that is just big enough for the cat and a coyote can’t enter or get their head inside.” She labels her own coyote-deterrent suggestions, separately, as having “minimal to no research that I am aware of.” None of that is written for a burn scar or a flooded block, and this page does not convert it into one, but it is closer to your situation than a colony study that measured presentation and nothing else.

The disease line, and the general wildlife line

The same paper states: “All feeding methods enable the interspecific transfer of disease from saliva on feeding bowls and feeders.” The specific diseases it names are feline leukemia virus and the raccoon rabies virus variant it describes as prevalent in Rhode Island, which is a regional fact rather than a national one. The mechanism, shared bowls and shared saliva, is not regional.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission publishes the general version for any food left outdoors, and it names the animals: “When wild animals reliably find food near homes or businesses, they will return looking for more. Bears, foxes, coyotes, and racoons will actively seek out porches or garages if they’ve found food in similar places before. This increases the chance of dangerous encounters with people and pets.” On the health side it states: “Raccoons, foxes, and skunks hanging around a food source can put people and pets at risk of exposure to rabies and other harmful diseases”, and the sentence after that one adds behavior to the disease point: “Deer, bears, coyotes, raccoons, and alligators can become more aggressive toward people and pets when they are fed by humans.” About shared food sources generally it states “When many animals eat from the same food source, diseases can spread quickly.” That commission is writing about people who feed wildlife on purpose, not about a lost-cat station, and its recommendation in that context is to remove unnatural food sources. It is quoted here because it is the clearest published statement of what a bowl of food outdoors does, and that mechanism does not care why you put the bowl there.

The AVMA adds the post-disaster note that turns this from a general worry into a local one, listing what to survey for on your own property after a disaster: “sharp objects, dangerous materials, dangerous wildlife, contaminated water, downed power lines, or other hazards.” Dangerous wildlife is in that list, in the national veterinary profession’s own recovery guidance, before anyone puts food on the ground.

The Conflict Nobody Resolves: A Station in an Ash Zone

Here is the collision at the center of this page, stated as precisely as we can and left unresolved because no source resolves it.

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, in the ash and debris section of its pet safety fact sheet for fire-affected areas, publishes this: “Keep pets from eating or licking anything on the ground. Do not allow pets to drink from puddles or water bowls that have been left outside. Feed pets indoors and do not put food or treats directly on the ground, use a bowl that can be washed and cleaned after use.” The same sheet states: “Any food that has been exposed to smoke, heat or fire should be discarded.”

A feeding station is food and water, outside, on the ground, in exactly the environment that sheet is describing.

Be careful about what that means. The county’s sheet is written about a pet you already have, in your care, at a property you have returned to. It is not written about a station set out to locate a cat you cannot find, and it does not address that situation at all. It is not a prohibition aimed at you. But the hazard it describes is not conditional on the animal’s ownership status, and pretending otherwise would be exactly the kind of quiet fabrication this page exists to avoid.

Nothing opened for this page weighs the two against each other. Among the sources opened for this page there is no sentence saying that a cat missing in an ash zone is better served by food on the ground than by no food at all, and none saying the opposite. What exists is a hazard statement on one side and a recovery method on the other, and the space between them is a judgment call.

So make it a conversation rather than a guess. Your veterinarian knows your cat and knows what an exposure would mean for it. Your county animal services knows what is already being done in that zone, and may be doing some of it themselves: during the Eaton Fire, Pasadena Humane’s public page stated that “Our team is setting up feeding stations for community cats” in the Altadena and Pasadena fire zone areas. That is one organization, in one incident, doing this work in a fire zone with staff and authority, for community cats rather than for a specific owner’s missing animal. It is a reason to call your own local agency and ask what is happening where you are, not a template you can lift.

Two things are worth asking on that call. Whether a station is appropriate at all in the specific area you have in mind. And, if it is, whether a container, a raised surface or a covered setup is preferable to a bowl on open ground, because the one variable the Mitchell paper actually measured was how the food was presented.

Do not carry a returning cat straight into the house. EPA’s own ash page includes the instruction in one line: “Clean ash off pets and other animals and keep them away from contaminated sites.”

The Camera: What Is Published, and What Is Not

The camera is the honest half of this method. It does not persuade an animal to do anything. It records what walked past.

What the sources say a camera is for. The Missing Animal Response Network states that cameras are “a primary way to confirm a cat’s location and can provide details on where to place humane traps,” and its surveillance page states that they “can help provide evidence that the lost pet is in the area and whether s/he will enter a humane trap if one is set up.” Note the second half of that sentence. A camera can show you a cat approaching a trap and refusing it, which is information you cannot get any other way, and one of the network’s own published cases turns on exactly that: it describes a cat where “The wildlife camera helped confirm that he WAS in the yard but was NOT going into the small trap, thus a “drop trap” was used instead.” The camera did not catch the animal. It changed the equipment.

What the sources say about set-up. The surveillance page is blunt that the device is not the whole story: “Whichever camera you select, you can improve your success by setting up the camera effectively because even a great camera won’t get a single picture of a lost pet if set up poorly.” It also warns that the effectiveness of a camera “is dependent on several factors including the quality of the camera and where/how it is set up.”

The one height statement in the record is a warning, not an instruction. The same page points readers at a trail-camera retailer’s buyer’s guide and then corrects it for this use: “Since their website is aimed primarily at deer hunters, the height that they suggest placing the camera (24”-36”) is too high for cats and small dogs, but most of the information is applicable to setting up a camera to locate missing pets.” It tells you a common figure is wrong for your animal. It does not publish a right one, and this page will not invent one either.

On flash, and on theft. The network states: “We recommend infrared cameras that do not flash (because then no one sees them and they are not likely to be stolen).” That is the only equipment preference quoted on this page, and it is quoted because it is published rather than because we tested anything. Two consequences in a disaster zone specifically. Unattended equipment sits in an area that may be under a curfew, may have patrols, and may have people in it who have lost everything. The network’s stated reason for a no-flash camera is that nobody sees it. Consider also telling the agency running the zone that your camera is there, both so that a responder who finds it knows what it is and so that you are not the reason somebody calls in a suspicious device.

What a camera measures, from the one study that counted. Mitchell and colleagues state: “Our study shows that setting up a motion-activated camera at a feeding location can provide a good estimate of population size in less than two weeks by counting the number of distinct individual cats captured on photographs.” That is a statement about counting cats at a feral colony over a specific period, not a promise about your cat, and the same paper notes that a hardware failure cost them one month of wildlife visitation data. Cameras fail. Cards fill. Batteries die in cold. Plan on checking rather than trusting.

What no source published. No document opened for this page gives a camera height for a cat, a trigger interval, a detection distance, a battery expectation, a number of cameras, or a spacing between them. There is no brand comparison here and no performance claim, because we did not find published figures we could stand behind and this site does not manufacture them.

When the Camera Catches a Cat

Two failure modes, both documented.

The wrong cat. After a disaster there are more unfamiliar animals moving than usual. The Missing Animal Response Network publishes a case where the camera’s main contribution was elimination: “wildlife cameras helped rule out the wrong cat (gray tabby with white chest) in one area while the other camera confirmed right where Binky (Russian Blue cat) was hiding.” Work from specific markings rather than a general impression, and be willing to be wrong twice before you are right once.

A cat that does not behave like your cat. NASAAEP’s Mass Care and Sheltering volume makes the point in its shelter-handling guidance, and it transfers: “All cats in a disaster or emergency are under stress. Please be sensitive and respectful of their space. What may seem to you to be a feral cat, may only be a very frightened cat.” That is written for volunteers opening a cage in a temporary shelter, not for an owner looking at a photograph. What it tells you is that a frightened cat presenting as feral is a documented, expected thing, so a photograph of a cat that looks nothing like the animal you remember is not proof of anything either way.

The corollary is one this page will state directly: a photograph is a location and a time. It is not a diagnosis of the animal’s condition, and it is not a guarantee that the animal will still be there tomorrow.

If You Trap, What Comes Next

Route the animal, not just the trap. Humane World’s instruction covers the outcome nobody plans for: “Be sure to monitor the trap and quickly release any wildlife or other animal you unintentionally capture.” If what you catch is a cat that is not yours, that is not a wildlife release and it should not be treated as one. Call your local animal control or the incident’s designated animal agency and follow what they tell you. NASAAEP’s Mass Care volume describes the infrastructure that exists for this in a well-run response, listing among its recommended public messages a “Dedicated and well-known location to bring stray animals” and a “Dedicated location for people to view found reports or look for their lost animals.” Somebody else may be looking for the animal in your trap.

Understand that a hold clock may be involved, and that it is not yours to set. The same document states: “While the AHJ may extend the hold time for stray animals beyond the normal scope, the usual limit is 15 to 30 days.” That is a best-practice statement about emergency sheltering, not the law where you live. What actually governs a stray hold, and what a facility will accept as proof that an animal is yours, is covered on our page about proving a pet is yours and working the reclaim, which goes jurisdiction by jurisdiction rather than publishing one number.

Do not go from the trap to the living room. A cat that has been living in a burn scar or a flooded block is carrying what it has been living in, and it will start removing that with its tongue as soon as it settles. The sourced sequence, including what to put on yourself and what never goes on the animal, is on our cat decontamination page. Call your veterinarian regardless of how the animal looks. If the cat has been feeding at a station shared with raccoons or skunks, say so on that call: shared bowls are a documented disease-transfer route, and a cat that has been eating alongside wildlife is a bite-risk and rabies-exposure question for the veterinarian, not only a decontamination one. If you think it has swallowed or groomed off something toxic, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center publishes the number (888) 426-4435, describes the service as available “24 hours a day, 365 days a year”, and states “A consultation fee may apply.”

Do not put the cat back outside to settle in. The AVMA’s recovery guidance is specific: “Release cats, dogs, and other small animals indoors only. They could encounter dangerous wildlife and debris if allowed outside unsupervised and unrestrained.” Whether the property is fit for an animal at all is its own check, and it is on our returning home with pets checklist. Protecting Yourself While You Do This

A station in a burn zone means somebody handling ash, repeatedly, on a schedule. The idea that a short trip does not count is exactly the assumption to discard.

EPA’s Protect Yourself from Ash page, last updated July 28, 2026, states that “Ash from burned structures in the wildland-urban interface generally contains more harmful chemicals than forest ash”, and names asbestos, heavy metals and cancer-causing chemicals among the dangers that may be present. It is also clear about who should not be doing this at all: “People with heart or lung disease, older adults, and pregnant women should not participate in ash cleanup efforts.” On children it states “Children should not be near ash or sites contaminated with ash”, and the sentence directly after it names the condition on their return: “Children should be permitted to return only after affected areas have been cleaned up.” Neither of those exclusions is softened by wearing better equipment, and this page does not soften them either.

What EPA lists for the person going in:

  • “Wear work gloves, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks, and sturdy, thick-soled shoes to avoid skin contact.”
  • “Wear goggles and head coverings to keep ash out of your eyes and hair. Contact with wet ash can cause chemical burns or skin irritation.”
  • “Wear a close-fitting respirator that filters ash particles from the air you breathe to help protect your lungs. Select a respirator that is NIOSH Approved® and has the words “NIOSH” and either “N95” or “P100” printed on it. These have two straps and are available online and at many hardware stores and pharmacies. Buy respirators in a size that can be tightened over your mouth and nose with a snug seal to your face.”
  • “Surgical masks and one-strap dust masks will not protect your lungs. They are not designed to seal tightly to the face.”

Read the sentence EPA puts immediately after that one, because it is a condition on the equipment rather than an endorsement of it: “If you have heart or lung disease talk to your health provider before using a respirator or working around ash.” A respirator is not a way around the earlier sentence about who should not be doing this.

And if you get it on you: “If you get ash on your skin, in your eyes, or in your mouth, wash it off as soon as you can.” That is EPA’s whole instruction on the point, and nothing here will extend it into a rinse time or a soap.

None of that goes on an animal. A reader who has just been told to put on a respirator will look at the cat and have an idea. Los Angeles County Department of Public Health closed that door in print: “Do not place an N95 respirator on your pet. N95 respirators for people can be harmful if used on pets. Elastic straps can choke or strangle pets and the mask material can block their ability to breathe through their nose or pant.”

Three more EPA lines that bear on this specific errand:

On what you carry back. EPA states “Do not bring ash back. Avoid tracking ash offsite, into your car, or places where others can be exposed”, and follows it with the procedure: “Wash your hands and change into clean clothes and shoes before you get into your car. Place clothing and shoes contaminated with ash in a plastic bag and seal it completely before putting it in the trunk of the car to keep ash out of the riding compartment.” If your animals are staying somewhere else while you do this, you are the connection between the ash and them.

On your own food at the site. EPA states: “Avoid bringing food or eating at the affected site unless you keep the food in a sealed container. Wash your hands well before eating.” That sentence is about your food and your eating, not about a station. It is quoted here because a person carrying a bag of cat food into an ash zone is being told something about sealed containers, and it is the only line in anything opened for this page that touches food at an ash site at all.

On what stops the job entirely. EPA states: “If you suspect hazardous waste, including asbestos, is present, contact your local hazardous waste authorities regarding appropriate disposal”, and elsewhere advises: “Consider seeking professional assistance if you find structural damage or hazardous materials, the HVAC system is impacted, or the scale of cleanup is more than you can manage on your own. Local authorities can recommend reputable specialists.” Suspected asbestos is a phone call, not a task. This page describes no method for handling, wetting, bagging or moving debris of any kind, and you should not improvise one to get a camera onto a post.

The ash is not the only hazard in this section, and the page’s own sourcing names the other one. The Mitchell study documented coyotes, raccoons and skunks visiting a feeding station, and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission states plainly that food which draws wildlife “increases the chance of dangerous encounters with people and pets” and that “Raccoons, foxes, and skunks hanging around a food source can put people and pets at risk of exposure to rabies and other harmful diseases”. Every one of those hazards has been framed on this page as a risk to the cat. It is also a risk to you, because you are the one placing, checking and re-baiting the station, and Robertson’s own note is that “Many lost cats only come out at night”, which is when a station most needs checking. Treat every approach to the station as an approach to a baited site, not a routine errand. What follows is this page’s own reasoning, not a published protocol: do not approach in the dark without a light, do not reach into a covered or enclosed station without seeing inside it first, do not handle bowls or bait bare-handed, tell someone where you are going and when you will be back, and ask your county animal services, on the same call you were already told to make about access, what is moving through the zone.

The Flood Version Is a Different Set of Questions

Nothing opened for this page publishes a homeowner station protocol for a flooded block either. What does exist is a published list of the questions a professional response asks before feeding animals in a flood-damaged area, and while it was written for responders feeding animals confined inside a structure rather than for a station set for a free-roaming cat, the questions themselves are the right ones.

NASAAEP’s Animal Search and Rescue document, under Feed-in-Place, lists these among its considerations:

  • “Is the structure accessible to staff or ASAR teams for feeding in place?”
  • “Will teams need to access by boat?”
  • “Is there debris that makes it unsafe for daily visits?”
  • “Are the projected flood levels rising or falling?”
  • “Will access to the property be consistent and improved or is it under threat of being cut off by worsening conditions (i.e., flooding, wildfires, and more)?”
  • “Are there security concerns for staff making daily visits?”

Read that list as a screening test rather than as instructions. Every one of those questions is about whether a daily visit is possible and safe, which is the question a station lives or dies on. If the honest answer to two or three of them is no, the answer for you is a call to the agency rather than a trip with a bag of food.

The Numbers This Page Could Not Source, Named Individually

This section exists because the gaps are where invented answers grow, and because a page that quietly omits them reads as though the answers exist somewhere else.

No search radius for a disaster zone. The distance figures that circulate come from Huang and colleagues, a questionnaire study of ordinary lost cats, whose own limitations section warns about generalizability and whose text contains no disaster, flood, fire, hurricane, evacuation or wildfire.

No station spacing and no number of stations. Nothing opened for this page states how many stations to run or how far apart to put them.

No camera height. The one height figure in the record is a retailer’s deer-hunting figure that the Missing Animal Response Network says is too high for cats and small dogs. No source opened for this page published a replacement.

No trigger interval, detection range or battery figure. Not published in any source opened here, and not stated here.

No bait quantity and no feeding schedule for this situation. Robertson describes the schedule that colony feeders use, then says plainly that it “is not practical when using a feeding station for a lost cat.” The Mitchell study compared three regimes at one colony and reported which drew fewer coyotes. Neither is an instruction for a station set in a burn scar, and this page does not convert either into one.

No duration. No source opened here says how long to run a station, and this page sets no deadline for your search. The nearest published thing is a probability rather than a schedule: Huang and colleagues state “There was little increase in probability of being found alive after day 61.” That was measured on ordinary lost cats answering a questionnaire, it describes how the odds behave rather than instructing anyone to take a station down, and this page does not convert it into a stopping date.

No homeowner protocol for this in anything opened here. NASAAEP’s equipment appendix for animal search and rescue lists “Bait food” and “Humane traps” under Capture Companion Animal Needs, and the two camera entries in that document sit under Assessment Needs and under animal and patient treatment, described as a “Camera for photographic documentation of animals and any relevant medical condition.” In other words, the responder document lists traps and bait as capture equipment and treats cameras as documentation tools, and it does not describe a station-and-camera detection method. Its Mass Care volume mentions the service existing in a well-resourced response, listing “Lost and found assistance, including arrangements for trapping frightened loose pets” among the additional services that a pet supply distribution site “may provide an opportunity” to offer. That is a service an agency might stand up. It is not a method published for you.

The Version You Set Up Before Anything Happens

Almost everything above gets faster if two or three pieces are already in place, and none of them costs a weekend.

Photographs that a stranger could match. Face-forward, in good light, the animal alone, plus one shot of each distinctive marking. This is what makes a camera image usable and it is what a database match runs on. Our reunification workflow covers what the photograph has to give a matching system.

A microchip registration that reaches a phone you will still answer. A camera tells you where the cat is. A chip is what turns a stranger finding it into a call. Our microchip registration audit walks the checks, including the case where the registry still lists a shelter or a previous owner.

The name and number of the office that would run this. In most communities that is animal control, and NASAAEP’s language for who is in charge after a disaster is the agency having jurisdiction. Find out, now, who that is where you live, and whether they lend traps.

A decision made in advance about whether you would set a station in an ash zone at all, taken with your veterinarian, so that it is a considered position rather than something decided at speed while you are standing in a driveway.

A written log. Where each station is, when you placed it, when you checked it, what the card showed, who you told. In a landscape without landmarks, a written position is the only position you have. The Checklist

  • File with animal control, the shelters and the lost-and-found databases first, and keep those reports active. A station does not replace them.
  • Ask the agency running the incident whether the area is open to you, and do not enter a closed or burned area to search. Two organizations quoted on this page publish that instruction outright.
  • Ask your local animal control or county animal services about placing a station, borrowing a trap, and whether they are already working the area.
  • Ask, on the same call, what to do if you catch a cat that is not yours.
  • Decide whether a station belongs in an ash zone at all, with your veterinarian, knowing that a county health department tells owners not to put food or water on the ground in a fire-affected area and that no source resolves that against a search.
  • Place the station where you can actually return to it inside whatever access window you have been given.
  • Point a camera at it before you set any trap. The published purpose of the camera is to tell you where to put the trap.
  • Expect other animals. One peer-reviewed study of a colony feeding station recorded coyotes, raccoons and skunks, and reported that how the food was presented changed how many came.
  • Treat every visit to the station as an approach to a baited site: bring a light after dark, do not reach blind into a covered station, do not handle bowls or bait bare-handed, tell someone where you are going and when you will return, and ask your county animal services what is moving through the zone.
  • Do not set a trap you cannot get back to. The published instruction is to monitor it and quickly release anything you catch by accident.
  • Work from specific markings when a cat appears on the card, and be prepared to rule cats out.
  • Wear what EPA lists for ash, and put none of it on any animal.
  • Wash your hands, change your clothes and shoes, and bag anything ash-covered before it goes in the car.
  • Log every station, every check, every card and every call, on paper.
  • When the cat is in hand, decontaminate before the house and call your veterinarian, regardless of how it looks.

Three lines are open 24 hours a day, every day. All three were read on their own websites on August 11, 2026. SAMHSA’s Disaster Distress Helpline page, last updated 09/26/2025, says “Call or text 1-800-985-5990.” Spanish: “Llama o envía un mensaje de texto 1-800-985-5990 presiona “2.”” For Deaf and Hard of Hearing ASL callers: “Please text or call the Disaster Distress Helpline at 1-800-985-5990 using your preferred Relay provider.” SAMHSA states “There is no need to give any identifying information when you contact DDH”, and adds that any basic questions a counselor asks at the end of a call are optional. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: call 988, text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org, with the site stating “The 988 Lifeline is available 24/7/365. Your conversations are free and confidential.” The Veterans Crisis Line: “Dial 988 then Press 1”, “Text 838255”, or chat online, with the site stating “You don’t have to be enrolled in VA benefits or health care to connect.” Talking to a licensed mental health professional about any of this is a reasonable step, and it does not require calling a hotline first.

Should I set a feeding station or go straight to a humane trap for a cat missing after a disaster?

The organization that trains people to do this work puts the station first. The Missing Animal Response Network's lost cat behavior page, read August 11, 2026, states: "Sometimes setting a humane trap is not the best method to use to recover a missing cat. In many cases, the use of digital wildlife cameras combined with feeding stations is a better way to confirm possible sightings or to confirm that your displaced cat is still in the immediate area." It describes the sequence plainly, saying the concept is setting out food with a wildlife camera that photographs every animal that eats it, so that reviewing the card the next morning tells you which animals are actually there, and adds: "From that point, you could work to strategically and humanely trap your cat while avoiding the raccoons and other cats." Humane World for Animals describes the same order on its lost dog page, saying to place food and water in a safe spot, use a motion-activated camera to see if the animal is eating it, and then set a humane trap once you know it is visiting and when. Before you place anything in a disaster area, settle access with the agency that controls it: Los Angeles County Department of Public Health states "Do not attempt to return to disaster-affected areas until cleared to do so by local authorities", and the agency having jurisdiction for animals after a disaster, which NASAAEP says is animal control in most communities, is the office to ask about trapping, borrowing a trap and coordinating with any response already underway.

Will a feeding station for my lost cat attract wildlife?

Yes, and that is the documented cost of the method rather than a side note. One peer-reviewed study examined it directly: Mitchell, Strohbach, Sorlien and Marshall, writing in Society & Animals in 2022, analyzed 12,272 photographs from a motion-activated camera at a single feral cat colony in Rhode Island and report in their abstract that "Abundant food on the ground was associated with increased wildlife visits, while elevated or limited food was associated with decreased wildlife visits." In their discussion they write: "Coyote, raccoon, and skunk visits were highest when cats were fed abundant food at ground level; only raccoon visits were common when food was just as abundant but elevated to table height (other mesopredators, including coyotes, could not or would not jump or climb up); coyote, raccoon, and skunk visits were low when food was limited on the ground and generally gone before they arrived at night." They also state "Hence, leaving abundant food in bowls on the ground may set the cats up for coyote predation", and, about the same colony, "There could be other reasons for the short lifespan of the cats, as our study was not set up to identify the source of mortality." That was one colony in one suburb studied over two years, not a disaster zone. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission publishes the general version for any outdoor food: "When wild animals reliably find food near homes or businesses, they will return looking for more. Bears, foxes, coyotes, and racoons will actively seek out porches or garages if they've found food in similar places before. This increases the chance of dangerous encounters with people and pets." That sentence names people as well as pets, and you are the person who will be approaching this station repeatedly to check the camera and refill the food, often after dark. Discuss the trade-off with your county animal services before you decide, because they know what is moving in your area right now.

Is it safe to put a feeding station and camera in a burn area?

Treat the burn area as closed until the agency running it says otherwise, and treat the ash as a hazard to you. Pasadena Humane's Eaton Fire animal assistance page, read August 11, 2026, states: "For your safety and the safety of animals, do not enter burned areas to rescue or search for animals. Trained responders are on-site and equipped to handle these situations." Los Angeles County Department of Public Health states "Do not attempt to return to disaster-affected areas until cleared to do so by local authorities." Where you are cleared to be, EPA's Protect Yourself from Ash page, last updated July 28, 2026, states that ash from burned structures in the wildland-urban interface "generally contains more harmful chemicals than forest ash", and lists what to wear: "work gloves, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks, and sturdy, thick-soled shoes to avoid skin contact", plus goggles and head coverings, plus "a close-fitting respirator" that is NIOSH Approved and marked N95 or P100, adding that "Surgical masks and one-strap dust masks will not protect your lungs." EPA also states "If you get ash on your skin, in your eyes, or in your mouth, wash it off as soon as you can", and that "People with heart or lung disease, older adults, and pregnant women should not participate in ash cleanup efforts" and "Children should not be near ash or sites contaminated with ash." None of that protective equipment goes on an animal: Los Angeles County Department of Public Health states "Do not place an N95 respirator on your pet. N95 respirators for people can be harmful if used on pets. Elastic straps can choke or strangle pets and the mask material can block their ability to breathe through their nose or pant." The station itself is the unresolved part. The same Los Angeles County Department of Public Health sheet, writing about ash and debris hazards, states "Keep pets from eating or licking anything on the ground. Do not allow pets to drink from puddles or water bowls that have been left outside. Feed pets indoors and do not put food or treats directly on the ground, use a bowl that can be washed and cleaned after use." That sheet is written about a pet already in your care, not about a station set for a cat you cannot find, and nothing opened for this page weighs the two against each other. Ask your veterinarian and your county animal services which risk they would take.

My trail camera has photographed nothing for days. What does that mean?

It means the camera has not photographed your cat, and that is all it means. A camera reports what walked in front of its sensor, so an empty card is consistent with the cat being elsewhere, with the station being in the wrong spot, with the camera being aimed or set up poorly, or with the cat not having come out yet. Two published observations bear on the waiting. The Missing Animal Response Network, describing what it calls the threshold factor, writes that displaced cats often hide in silence at first and that "While some cats take only hours or a few days to reach their threshold, many others take several days (typically ten to twelve days) before they break cover," then adds "We suspect the threshold is reached due to their thirst, although more research needs to be conducted into this lost cat behavior." Danielle Robertson of Lost Pet Research and Recovery, whose surveillance material the network republishes with credit, writes that "It often takes several days and sometimes a week or longer of setting a feeding station before the lost cat appears on camera." This page does not set a deadline for your search. The study people cite for timing, Huang and colleagues in the journal Animals in 2018, re-read in full on August 24, 2026, is a self-selected online questionnaire about ordinary lost cats rather than about cats displaced by a disaster, and what it publishes is a probability rather than a stopping rule: "Of missing cats, approximately one-third (34%; 95% CI 31% to 37%) were found alive by day 7, 50% (95% CI 47% to 53%) by day 30, and 56% (95% CI 53% to 59%) by day 61. There was little increase in probability of being found alive after day 61." It reports 61% found alive by one year. A curve that flattens is not an instruction to stop looking, and no source opened for this page publishes one. Keep the reports filed with animal control, the shelters and the lost-and-found databases working while you decide what to do next. Speaking with a licensed mental health professional is a reasonable next step.

The camera caught a cat. How do I know it is mine?

Compare the photograph against specific markings rather than against a general impression, and expect to rule cats out before you rule one in. The Missing Animal Response Network publishes a case in which that is exactly what happened, describing how "wildlife cameras helped rule out the wrong cat (gray tabby with white chest) in one area while the other camera confirmed right where Binky (Russian Blue cat) was hiding." After a disaster there are more unfamiliar cats moving than usual, and the shelter guidance in NASAAEP's 2023 Mass Care and Sheltering best practices makes a related point about how they will look to you: "All cats in a disaster or emergency are under stress. Please be sensitive and respectful of their space. What may seem to you to be a feral cat, may only be a very frightened cat." A photographed cat that behaves nothing like your cat is not evidence that it is not your cat, and it is not evidence that it is. If you decide to trap, coordinate first with your local animal control or county animal services, since trapping, holding and moving a free-roaming animal is governed locally and, in a declared disaster, by the agency having jurisdiction. Humane World for Animals adds the instruction that goes with any trap: monitor it, and quickly release any wildlife or other animal you unintentionally capture.

I trapped my cat. Can I take it straight into the house?

No. Whatever the cat has been living in is on its coat, and a cat starts removing that with its tongue as soon as it settles. Handle the decontamination before the animal has the run of a room, using the sourced sequence in our guide to decontaminating a cat after ash or floodwater, and call your veterinarian, because a cat that has been missing in a disaster area may need examination for injury, dehydration or exposure regardless of how it looks. Tell the veterinarian if the cat was eating at a shared feeding station, since a cat that has been feeding alongside raccoons or skunks is a bite-risk and disease-exposure question as well as a decontamination one. If you believe the cat has swallowed or groomed off something toxic, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center publishes the number (888) 426-4435, describes the service as available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and states that a consultation fee may apply. Los Angeles County Department of Public Health's fact sheet for returning to fire-affected areas is blunt about the property itself: inspect it for broken glass, exposed nails and other sharp objects as well as loose and weakened structures, and do not let pets wander through areas where buildings or fences have been damaged. The American Veterinary Medical Association's disaster recovery guidance adds the release rule: "Release cats, dogs, and other small animals indoors only. They could encounter dangerous wildlife and debris if allowed outside unsupervised and unrestrained."
